Title: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 04/06/14 at 14:04:29 I started to fab a false oil tank to house all the electric. I want to know what is the best place to put the hole for the wires, I was thinking at the bottom slightly facing the rear. I made it with a 4'' truck exhaust pipe and with the top of two firefighter air tanks, using this i have round cover. I still need to fab a cover and grind the welds.I used stuff lying around. Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by S-P on 04/06/14 at 16:33:18 That's cool! Where are you going to put the battery? |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 04/06/14 at 16:41:05 under the swingarm pivot, I will make a bracket to hold a smaller battery. Marc |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by justin_o_guy2 on 04/06/14 at 19:56:51 Will there be a fender to keep crap from the tire from flinging into the hole? |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 04/07/14 at 13:54:48 Yes, a flat trailer fender mounted on the swingarm, I'm still at the beginning of my bobber built. Marc |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 04/27/14 at 15:22:37 I changed my exhaust and now i cannot fit the false oil tank. I need to make a new one. I will reuse the cap, if someone want the middle portion, just let me know. the tube is bolt on. Marc |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by JBK on 04/28/14 at 05:19:53 How much? |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 04/28/14 at 17:26:56 10$ + shipping, but you will need to fab or buy the endcaps, I will post pic tomorrow after work. Marc |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 05/22/14 at 18:00:17 I had time to make another one today in the same style. I have enought space for all the electric and the stock toolbag. Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by nickthe_human on 05/22/14 at 20:18:13 very nicely done! |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by lee12871 on 05/27/14 at 06:19:45 Really nice. I like how you cut it away to clearance the exhaust. |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by Arnold on 05/27/14 at 06:50:32 Nice but wouldnt the heat from the muffler get the inside of the tank hot? |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 05/27/14 at 07:54:45 I have almost 1/2 inch of clearance, if its needed i will put a little piece of stick on heat shield. Marc |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by Arnold on 05/27/14 at 08:04:22 Yea, i dont think it radiates much heat anyway, mostly if there's a direct contact. |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 07/21/14 at 16:50:18 A little update, Marc http://i59.tinypic.com/kb5eeq.jpg http://i58.tinypic.com/2ep53bt.jpg |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by Arnold on 07/21/14 at 17:01:36 Very cool, who did the paint job? |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by BalingWire on 07/21/14 at 17:02:41 Outstanding workmanship on the electronics tank! I think I'm going to go the leather pouch route, since my welding isn't up to snuff enough to show on the side of a bike. Where did you put the rectifier? |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 07/21/14 at 17:18:29 thanks guys, I painted the bike with rainbow metalflake using a modified undercoating gun and lot of clear. The rectifier is mounted between the rear frame rails, you can see it a little in this pic, the small grey parts under the rear crossmember. Marc http://i61.tinypic.com/30iv0d0.jpg |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by Arnold on 07/21/14 at 17:35:03 Do you have the battery in yet? |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 07/21/14 at 17:45:28 The battery is under the swingarm, http://i59.tinypic.com/30w49kk.jpg |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by BalingWire on 07/21/14 at 17:47:06 Thanks for taking a pic of that rectifier! :) I figure that's how I'll do mine, point it to the back. If I go the leather pouch route, I might rivet a standoff piece of metal to keep the heat from the scorching the leather. |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by Demin on 07/21/14 at 17:56:13 VERY COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8-) |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 07/23/14 at 15:52:59 Thank you, I hope to ride it next week. Marc |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 08/02/14 at 14:43:43 I started it, I still need to do 2 more coats of clear on the tins and to fit a speedometer.I plan to ride it next monday. Marc |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by Demin on 08/02/14 at 15:49:00 Clearing flake sucks.I just did one with huge flake.Cleared it 'til no more would stick.Let it dry for about a month and recleared it.Been sitting for about 2 weeks now.Gonna wet sand and buff maybe tomorrow. http://p1.bikepics.com/2014/07/01/bikepics-2679953-800.jpg |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by Demin on 08/02/14 at 15:49:54 What color base did you put down |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 08/02/14 at 19:02:00 I shot over a black base but this was unnecessary, I shot the metal flake dry with a modified undercoating gun. Using a dry shooting method gives you full coverage, the color you see is only metalflake, no color or candy paint, only rainbow flake. it goes like this: prime -base color-1 coat of clear and shooting the flake on the wet clearcoat-followed by 5 or 6 coats of clear-let it dry a couple of days-sand-again 5-6 coats of clear-lot of sanding-wait a little-one or 2 light coats of clear-wet sand and buff. Its very time consuming and with full metalflake you lose a little depth, like the depth you see in your paint, but it flashes/sparkles more than chrome in the sun. Marc |
Title: Re: false oil tank in the making Post by kochic on 08/10/14 at 08:09:35 First ride yesterday, I need to modify the outlet of the muffler to cut the heat on the shock and the sissybar, maybe putting a little wood handle to my manual decompressor lever, again, because of the radian heat. With gloves its fine. I need to finish my seat, you can see the wife yoga mat under me. Other than these little thing i'm happy, best mod is the gearing change.
