Title: dies in gear, help!
Post by Boogieman on 04/02/14 at 11:54:39

Just put a fresh battery in, wired it up, starts up just fine but dies when I put it in gear, 1st 2nd..doesnt matter.
So what completely worthless POS safety equipment is causing this retardedness.

neutral or kickstand switch
or the relay above the carb.
or a short, sunspots or a gravitation shift.

Yep....whenever that neutral light on the dash goes out (since you put it in gear).....the safety stuff tells the bike to shut down.

It is most likely the side stand switch.  Take off the painted left side body cover, locate the connector that leads up from the sidestand switch.  Disconnect the connector and either use a tester to see if the side stand switch is working - or - Put a jumper wire across the other side of the connector and see if the bike stays running when you put it in gear.

I'm so dumb. why haven't I gotten a manual. relay above the carb? Whats it look like? Above my carburetor is the tank. Stuffed in the battery area there's a cylinder looking thing, a little black box that just sorta hangs out, attached only by wires. That's probably the relay. Can u confirm?

Dave my bike is all switched up. I don't have a dash or a speedometer or a tachometer. Disabling that stupid sidestand switch was like one of the first things I did. And when I find out what is causing this problem I'm going to rip that out too.

OK...until you get your manual you can do some exploring in the Technical Section.....this time in the electrical section.

Here is a lesson on the electrical system and what stuff looks like:

And here is a link to the wiring diagram:

Thank you so much for giving me links. An explanation of why I can't just search for it myself would be superfluous and lengthy.

Would make perfect sense to me, I've been on this site for 11 years and still can't work the so called search function.

I've found the easiest and quickest way to find anything on the site is to do a search from Google home page, just enter "suzukisavage.com" along with what ever you are searching for   ;)

the (2-wire) connector is under the seat, (1) green wire (1) black wire..
short it with a jumper to bypass switch (bike will think kickstand is up)

Another search trick - try this:
site:suzukisavage.com kickstand switch
The "site:suzukisavage.com" limits the search to only this wonderful site.
For Saturday night fun, I like this:
site:suzukisavage.com cam chain
Then, I hit the images tab, crack open a beer and take it all in. :)
