Title: Windows 8.? now FREE for <  9" device
Post by Oldfeller on 04/02/14 at 11:07:56

.... and there are words that devices costing less than $250 will get a version of free Win 8.? given to the OEMs.

So far no words for lower cost Win 8.? for John Q. Public, or any low cost Win 8.? for older devices such as XP.

Stay tuned for the exceptions and weasel words that are yet to become clear about this breaking offer.    More news to follow.

Not too quick on the pickup, but I am beginning to think you do not like Windows. :D

Thanks for all the info..about all these things.

I just anticipate the terms of their actual offer will be of no use to individual people and only of use to OEMs that agree to not build Chromebooks.

And I hope I'm actually wrong.

 ;D

Well, Win 8.1 pro is supposed to be free for students, until you actually try to go do it that is.  Once you are in the MS store system you get asked lots of  questions and the price keeps going up depending on your answers.

Finally, it looks like the only real "for free" is if you have Win 8 loaded as a full purchase registered owner, you can upload 8.1 for free.

MS is using some "buzz" to get you in the store so they can get your money.

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9245548/Microsoft_will_furnish_malware_assassin_to_XP_users_until_mid_2015

Microsoft will furnish malware assassin to XP users until mid-2015

On Patch Tuesday, the normal dose of Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) will be sent out to scrub infected XP PCs for more than a year after April the 8th.

This is good news for XP lovers, those that still trust MS enough to leave automatic updates turned on that is.

"The explanation: Microsoft has decided it best for all concerned -- including itself and its reputation -- that it throw some security bones, if only small ones, to those who can't or won't upgrade from XP".

Translation:   Microsoft bashing is at an all time high right now as their stupid greedy plan to money rape the XP folks has hit a real nerve in the computing community.

Folks are questioning what the heck Microsoft really provides, since they can't seem to come up with an OS that people WANT.   Point in this is that the "free MS" shite has flopped on Microsoft as well, since nobody seems to want what they are actually trying to give away for free, and the fact they are being soooooo durn selective in whom they give it away to counts against the effort as well.

I just keep hitting the "remind me later" button when asked.
