Title: Bike seems to bog down
Post by jcjohnson33 on 04/01/14 at 17:56:45

I have a '86 Savage with a '05 engine. I'm using my carburetor from the '86. the bike seems to run fine and idle fine but when riding it runs fine until I get to 1/3 or 1/2 throttle and above then the bike just bogs down. I bought a jet kit which came with a 152.5, 150, 147.5 main jet and the pilot jet. I've tried every combination I can think of with no difference. Is there something that you guys know of that can help me to correct this issue. I have completely taken the carb apart and cleaned everything. Also I am at 4600 feet above sea level. in Northern Cali. Thanks in advance.

Have you done the white spacer mod yet? It made a pretty huge difference on my bike.

Did the white spacer mod no difference. Found on another thread it may be because of the different timing of the spark from an 86 CDI to the '05 engine. It that thread the original poster swapped out the flywheel from the original engine to the new one so I'm gonna try that.

Yeah...from what I've read you either need the TCI box from the 05 or the flywheel from the 86 because of just that timing difference.

Have you checked the petcock? Maybe the carb is not getting enough fuel to run at 1/2 throttle.

So what jets do you have in it now?
pilot screw setting ?
air filter: stock or ??
exhaust; stock or  ??

Since you are using the '86 carb, what groove is the needle clip set on ?

^^this happened to me, same symptoms, low fuel flow through petcock

Did you do the "prime check" with yours to decide that it was the petcock ?

My Savage stalled recently after a dynamic acceleration, and barely started again after that - it turned out the vacuum line was barely hanging to the petcock connector, so I guess it wasn't allowing a normal fuel flow. It was OK on the prime setting, and since I fixed the connection everything works.

Earlier I had some flakes of paint from the tank blocking the petcock, which caused similar issues (stalling as soon as the engine sucked up all the fuel). So now this is the first place I look :)

BTW I guess if the engine won't get enough fuel due to petcock or fuel line problems it will backfire more, so that's one way to diagnose it.

Well, "barely hanging" will certainly do the trick on fuel flow.

@Lancer the carb is running stock jets. I did buy a jet kit and tried each main jet with no difference. As for the petcock I'm running the Raptor petcock.

Forgot to mention stock muffler/exhaust with hi flow air filter. The jet kit and air filter I got from Ryca. It is their small 3" cone filter.

I know it's a RYCA air filter, but double check that it's not one of the cone filters that block that open port on the carb.

No blockage I am using the 90 degree elbow that they offer to connect it to the carb and filter.

The stock exhaust is your bottle neck.  I believe that is likely why you are not seeing a difference when you try different jets and yet don't see a difference in performance.

Just wanted to give an update. I took the rotor out of the '86 motor and installed it in the '05 engine. Set the carb with stock jets, and using 2 small washers equal to 1/2 of the white spacer and I currently have the idle screw set 2 turns out from comepletly in. The bike runs great with good sound and good torque. Thanks for all your input.  :)
