Title: 2003 savage put up wet for two years.
Post by A.J. on 03/31/14 at 15:03:08

Just bought a 2003 savage with 2225 miles, has been stored wet for two years. I am trying to bring her back to life, and just now found this web.
Carb was like jelly inside . Cant find a repair kit. Bought new Suzuki pit thingy; I know! should have read the post about Raptor pit thingy.
Trying to get RUST out of gass tank. Was thinking about taking spark plug out and adding some Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil, and turning her over to get the oil re distributed.
If any members have had similar experiences------HELP
A.J.

Ok, you can find all the knowledge you need here at the site. Click on the link below.

I were you I would do the following:

Clean all the rust out of that tank
Clean every part of that carb
Change the old petcock to a rapture
Change the plug
Change the battery
Put in Shell Rotella oil

For future reference we post questions in the rubber side down area for mechanical fixes.  There are some extremely seasoned guys here on the site that can help you fix anything.  Good luck!

have patience, you will get it right.. the carb will require thorough soaking and cleaning (maybe twice)

There are lots of threads on the forum about all of these issues, gas tank rust, carb cleaning (as long as it it out, do the mods suggested they DO make a BIG difference), and general start up stuff.  Take the stock petcock back and get the Raptor. This is a great group of veteran Savage riders and fixers.  Good luck with resurrecting the bike!

Get the right Raptor, should be genuine Yamaha part 5LP-24500-01. The techies will soon correct me if I'm wrong.

oil and a filter change
then a carb clean.
both are covered in detail in the tech section.

I wouldn't worry about the gas tank immediately, see it runs.
any little bottle will hold enough gas to get her started and run for a bit.

once it runs then you'll know what's next.

To clean the tank....this is the method I use.

If your tank is not horribly rusty, you may be able to do just the cleaning described in the first few steps, without the use of he Evaporust or Phosporic Acid.

Clean the tank before trying to run it with a cleaned carb. No use in doing all that work to clog it back up with crud. I used The Works toilet bowl cleaner with excellent results. Its cheaper than most rust removers and much easier than building something to do electrolysis. One small bottle will do, slosh the tank for a day or 2. Then slosh with rubbing alcohol or ethanol to evaporate the water, and slosh with Marvel Mystery Oil or similar to coat the inside.

I just brought back a Savage that sat for 6 years. Here is what I did:

1.) Drain the gas tank completely, throw out stock petcock, install raptor one.
2.) Drain all the oil out. Refill with 10w40 (1.8qt)
3.) Drain the airbox if it has water/oil in it, check air filter condition. Replace if necessary.
4.) Clean every single bit of the carb, including pulling out the TEV. This guide is good:

Buy a KL carb rebuild kit if you find the float needle or jets too gummed up:

5.) Once you get the bike to fire go for a quick ride, come back, drain the oil again, put in fresh oil and a new oil filter.

Lancer on the forum sells a carb rejetting kit with all the jets and washers to do the carb modifications you'll definitely want to do while you have the carb apart.
