Title: knocking noise
Post by farva66 on 03/30/14 at 16:18:09

so i have a new cam chain tensioner on the way....however i do not believe it to be the source of this knocking or rattling, it does it at idle and when im riding.

and there is smoking at start up. if the bike is cold and i start her up there is a lot of smoke that comes out the exhaust and it lessons as the bike warms up....but it does not go away.

here are the links to videos on youtube

What does the smoke smell like? Stick a hand down there, rap it up, smell the hand. Have you checked your valve clearances?
What oil ya runnin?
You needin to add oil a lot?
Is it getting decent MPG?
Seems to me it was noisier on the rite side, the chain side.
Get a piece of small hose & jam it in yer ear, listen to the motor.
Use a metal rod, too. Lots of ways to listen to stuff..

Pop your oil cap and take a sniff..... if you smell gas you need to drain and refill.
Also pop your drain plug underneath and see if there is any oil in it.

yes you need to narrow down the location.
I use a stethoscope, but a screwdriver works.

Try a mechanics stethoscope, it is amazing what you can hear.

My Savage makes exactly the same sound. I think it's the sound of exhaust valves ticking. No matter how I adjust the valves, it's always the same. It was the same before and after I replaced the cam chain. Could be that I have a bad valve cover gasket, or bad connection between the exhaust and the engine, and I can hear it from there.

As for the smoke... well, it does that too sometimes :) Usually that means I have an oil leak (speedo cable is my usual suspect) and the oil drips on the hot exhaust. After riding, some oil from the leak will gradually drip on the cold exhaust and stay there, until it warms up again, so there is a bigger cloud. When riding it just burns up drop by drop, so there is less smoke.

The motorcycle is from 1998. I run 20W50 mineral oil, but it was the same on 10W40. I get MPG from 40 in town to 50-55 on a highway.

As for the oil consumption, It was recently about 200 ml per 200 miles, but I just fixed two leaks (oil filler cap, and speedo cable), so maybe it'll get a bit better now...

so for what its worth the oil smells like gas and the exhaust smells like burning oil.

Then you need to change out that oil.....soon, I wouldn't ride it again until you do.

Do you have the standard petc0ck? It is vacuum controlled and is known to fail and let gas drain into your oil case, you should change it out for a raptor one, just type in "raptor" into the search engine and select more than a month in the time slot.

If you're hearing a knocking next to the oil filter cover...
STOP!!!

I wonder if a piece of piston skirt falls out when you drop the sump plug. Seen it before where a bit of the skirt breaks off , engine still runs ok but piston slapping around makes a terrible knock. Ditto for collapsed Gudgeon pin boss.
