Anyone here built a Savage with a foot clutch, and suicide shifter?

If so, is there any chance of a pic or two of the gear shift set up, please.

I'm thinking if that post had added a clutch lever to that shifter it would work really good.

I think the stock system works great,. I get to keep hands on the bars in traffic. If someone forces me to make a quick downshift & swap lanes, I can do it,,& get away from them.

You won't get much support on this site for Suicide or Jockey Shift, Foot Clutch, removing the front wheel brake.....or any other modifications that make the bike hard to ride safely.

Foot clutches and hand shifters where around when traffic was light and speeds were slow. It is old technology that doesn't belong on a modern motorcycle....unless it is a static display show bike. If you are going to ride your bike - you might was well try and do it safely.

Not to upset the motorcycle police, but having put a Jockey shift on the first bike I built, found it an intreging project, and blast to ride.

Infact i did find it relatively dangerous even in the 'safest' situations , as was sometimes the hardtail, and springer front end. And now that I live in a populous area, I would not do it again.

But bikes are inherently unsafe, 2 wheels instead of 4, open rather than in a cage. Who really is to say at exactly what point you are taking too much risk with your own life.

I say go for it, and don't be afraid to share your own experiences.

Yep, it is your bike and you can do as you want....and hopefully it will turn out to be a blast. I just want to try and make people aware that safety needs to be considered.

If someone has never operated a foot clutch or hand shift before.....I just wanted to point out that they are not "convenient" to operate. Foot clutches can either be the rocker style that stop wherever you move them to with your foot - or they can be the spring type like you have in a car or tractor. Things can get really interesting if you get off balance on the clutch side and need to put your foot down in a hurry.

When I was a teenager my dad had a 1947 Indian Chief. Foot clutch, hand shifter on the right side, throttle on the left grip, spark advance on the right grip. We lived in a rural farm area and I could ride it......but it was a cumbersome thing to operate and get all those things moving in synch. It would have been a nightmare in traffic.

My first bike was a '37 Enfield. I bought it from the original owner, who bought that particular bike because it was the only one available with a foot shift. All others at that time were hand shift.

Fair enough if you have a disability but if not you are just upping your chances of ending up with one. There's cool and then there's just dumb.

If thats how they came from the factory, people would be trying to get them modded to work the way they do NOW.
