Title: what windsheilds are folk running on the savage?
Post by Art Webb on 03/22/14 at 01:07:08

I tried the search function and got only one hit
I like a sheild on my bike, and was wondering what folks here like for the savage / S40
I like the National Cycle plexifairing 3 but it doesn't seem to be available for the S40  >:(

I have this one, came on my bike when I bought it. I've removed it since I don't fancy windshields :)

I really like the suzuki shield, s40 windshield, kinda small but I like it that way

I've got this one:

http://www.motosport.com/cruiser/2012-suzuki-boulevard-s40-ls650--Suzuki-Genuine-Accessories-Chrome-Billet-Windshield

Works well for me. I'm 5'6" and this screen is short enough so I look over it rather than through it, which I prefer. Keeps the wind off my chest and most of it goes over my helmet.

Easy to install. Seems well made. It's not quick detatch though, and there is not a lot of adjustment due to the way the mounts are made. Maybe a couple of inches up or down is all. So if it fits you, you're good.  If it doesn't there isn't a lot of tweaking you can do.

Thanks for the replies, I'm looking for a sheild for mine right now, because riding at highway speeds is beating me up, so I wanted some feedback from actual savege / S40 owners
I;m surprised the gennie suzuli one is so inexpensive

I wanted a smallish one that would be tall enough to throw the wind over my head, but narrow enough so it wouldn't cause too much drag, and handlebar mountable.
What I decided on was this:

I am very happy with it.
Note: Their model listing does not show the S40, but I am sure it will fit. I don't know about the Savage, though.

I had one on my bike when I bought it, but I have no idea what it is. I'll have to post a pic one day and let you guys figure it out! ;D

I have since removed it. I like the wind on my chest.

Mine came with a Memphis Shades, I think it's a "Slim."

I like it; it blocks all of the wind and it's big enough that I can tape a thin strip of directions to the bottom. lol

Could just take a hack saw to the rear fender and then mount the back part of it to the front fork tubes.  Works like a fly screen. 70mph feels like 35mph.

Yep! I'm running the Memphis Shades "Slim" on my 1996. It's the first windshield I've ever owned and I love it. Memphis Shades has the most solid mounting system I've ever seen. I don't think any factory shield, including Harley can beat how solid it is. Even running the interstate at 75-80mph there is NO flex or wobble...NONE! I'll own nothing but a "Shade"!

Like the driver's backrest, is that a protak?

the memphis shades looks intersting, wonder if it'd work with the TT bars on my 07

lol at hacksawing the rear fender, I have no doubt it'd work, but I like my fender

basicaly my idea for this bike is to put some hard bags on it (like the ones I saw one member use off ebay with the lights on the bags, which I'd wire as turn signals), maybe a rack and tail trunk (or sissy bar bag) and a sheild to block the wind, as 65-70 mph is a bit punishing
I got the bike with the actual 'boulevard' saddlebags on it, but those are near useless for my purposes (actualy carrying stuff  ;D
I might even change the bars, as my fingers go numb while riding
I did notice the other day though that if I put my feet on the rear pags and lean forward like it was a sportbike or cafe this doens't seem to happen
I already have the Raptor on it, not quite ready for the versy tensioner, only 3380 miles on it
that driver's backrest might be a thing I want, too, so it'll be a bit like a touring  / commuter bike, but not a barge  ;)
matbe boards as well

I like my Memphis Shades "Slim" as well - mine is a 15" but if I find a taller 17" one for a reasonable price I will swap since my new headlight required me to move my shield a bit lower. Here's a pic with the stock headlight and Dyna Wide Glide mini-apes.

I will add my endorsement for the Memphis Shades Slim. Used it on a 2,000 mile trip. Still air behind it and it did an admirable job keeping off the rain. Since it is fork mounted, the handlebars are not an issue.

Keep us Posted

I used two windshields, the little Flyscreen:
http://www.nationalcycle.com/catalogue/imagesProducts/LS-N2531-570.jpg
and the Street Shield:
http://www.nationalcycle.com/images/products/webimages/SSHOMN2560VT1100C2Sabre_600.jpg
(pictures from National Cycle.)

The Flyscreen blocks just enough wind to have the wind trying to shove you off the bike at 75+ mph, but with full wind in the face.

The Street Shield made the ride back I-10 from the Mojave in a 40+ mph headwind, made a 500+ mile days acceptable, cut the wind in the face but with wind in the hair.

I have a smoked factory Suzuki windshield that is in OK shape (hardware is a little crusty, shield is good) that I don't want. If someone wants it and will pay for shipping I'd rather it go to use than rot in my basement.

I've got the Suzuki windshield on mine and I like it.  I do get a little buffeting at highway speeds and may try adding some lowers.  I think Schleppy's offer would be a great way to try one out!  If you decide you need a larger shield then you'd only be out shipping--good deal.

I, too, use the Suzuki OEM shield and do not find it objectionable in any way. That said, however, I've never tried anything else.

Another vote for the stock Suzuki S-40 screen. Sized just right to keep the wind blast off the chest, but short enough to see easily over the top of it. I also like that it is well made and very stable, even at highway speeds.

I enjoy the feel of moving through the open air. However, at highway speeds the force pushing into my chest area is excessive. I don't really like the looks of a windshield either. I decided to try a National Cycle Flyscreen. It moved some of the flow upward to my neck/helmet area, and does help. In reality I would like no windshield for city driving, and a bigger one for the highway. Of course your height(I'm 5-8), and the position/angle of the Flyscreen will vary the force.

I have the Plexifairing. I commute in the rain, so it helps keep less wet. More importantly, at 50mph it keeps the raindrops from becoming hornet stingers.

The downside is that I have to wax it in the evening when I get home (with spray on wax). The wax helps keep the rain from gathering on the shield. I am looking at possibly adding a manual wiper to it.

At night, in the rain it can be problem. Riding in the dark, I once stopped at a stop sign where all the steam came up from my fins and fogged out my windshield. Because it was so dark, I didn't realized that I had been blinded until I took off and couldn't see the road, and I felt the pavement change as I ended up on the shoulder. Yikes.

The shield has developed some cracks and I'm looking for some replacement. It would be nice if it had a top that easily flipped down when I need visibility over comfort  :)

I'm running a Puig America III screen and it's just perfect - max wind coverage and you can see over the top.

Last one was a Memphis Shades Demon. Works fine, looks odd the way my bike is built. http://www.memphisshades.com/universal-mount/demon

Have an older Maeir universal on the CL100 that I test fit on the Savage. Would work fine, but again, looks goofy.

I'll be ordering a small tombstone/police handlebar mounted one. Can't run a fork mounted unit in conjunction with the 7" sidemount headlight. And need a retro windshield to match the rest of the build, IF, and I mean if, I decide to junk it up with a windshield at all.

I have the Slipstreamer ss-20. Art, you responded to this back in January. I really like it. It works well.
