Title: WD - Opinion on a Drifter?
Post by EJID on 03/18/14 at 12:36:11

Just curious what's your take on this model...

My older brother just sold his Honda 1100 (Don't remember if it was the Shadow or the Sabre) but he's in the market for a replacement and this is a possible option...

The 99 (only year for that color scheme) at the farm is going strong with 100K miles on it. We did a clutch job on it last summer, use a Barnett Mean Streak version and a Mean Streak main spring...

$3900 is a steal, don't even argue the price. The engine will finish breaking in at around 25K miles on the odometer.

Seems like a lot of bike for the money. I paid nearly that for my Yammy 1100.. and have since put $700 just to get ridable ( new tires.rect.batt)

Deal!

Be certain that the engine is the one that came with the bike. Kawasaki had a big problem from 1987-1999 with the 1500's because they used a plastic oil pump gear (POG). It seems that the Drifters did not receive the plastic gear.
There was a recall but not all owners followed up.

Earliest production 99s had the plastic or a prototype metal gear. Later production 99s have the good gear.

My brother ended up picking up a used HD Ultra Classic instead. Didn't realize he was after a full fledged bagger (sounds like he picked it up for a steal though)

But this Drifter is still listed on CL in Grand Junction, CO and if I had enough extra, I would've gone after it myself.
