Title: Should I go to Sturgis?
Post by boognish on 03/17/14 at 18:37:28

It occurred to me today that the Sturgis motorcycle rally is just a couple hundred miles down the road from my new home. I want to go gawk at all the cool bikes and ride in a big ol' pack.
I just don't know anybody going, is Sturgis just a bunch of old timers? Will a man in his mid twenty's on a little Japanese motorcycle be welcomed with open arms?

I know those things don't matter however I want some opinions, advice, and experiences from the group.

Boo

I wanted to go last year but couldn't get anyone else to ride to it with .  ::)

Its a 1300 mile ride from my house , Three days there and three back Plus a couple of days to ride around the area ... Ten days total +- ... :-?

I'm retired , is the only reason I could go !   :P

I've rode my little Savage with the bigger bikes before and as long as the interstate is not involved all is OK !    no body in their right mind goes over 70 in a 55 , most of the time I woin't do a bit over 63 in a 55.

so

The question ??? about  "Little Jap Bike being welcome"   Most folks get smarter as they get older and it doin't take a lot of sence to know "Biking ain't about the machine"  , " Its the Love to Ride" , (anybody gives ya any lip , just take em to a stretch of curvey road and shut-em-up ) !  ;)

I went to Daytona last week and there were lots of different bikes there, but we were all "Bikers" . 8-)

So "Go for it " :)

I get pissed when the checkout line at the dollar store has more than 3 people...
If I ever go to Sturgis,... it'll be in the off season...

Naaaa,... my goal is Isle O Man... in the off season...
...(just want to stay at a bed n' breckie, eat some kippers and eggs, and do a few laps)... drink a pint, or 4... :-?...

...but,.. I'd love to see pics... ;)...

I'd go, if I were closer...
Be mad not to. Hey if you don't like it, you're close enough to turn round and go home...

I rode thru Sturgis on Memorial Day a few years back. Not as many as when they have their rally but still tons of bikes. Bikers of all ages on all kinds of bikes from BMW's to Mopeds. My 650 got quite a bit of attention because you do not see many of them. Don't worry about fitting in on a Jap bike because that is not what it is about. If your on a motorcycle to most your just another biker.   Problem is during the rally, you almost have to make motel, hotel or camping reservations a year ahead, or else be prepared to camp 50 miles every night from the rally. Once I was riding in Montana on my way back from Glacier National Park just as the Sturgis rally was ending and that was cool! Thousands of bikes going home in every different direction. You would be riding alone and then all of a sudden you would be cruising along with 20 or 30 motorcycles. If you get a chance to go, you should!

Here is another one, Sturgis that is.  Sturgis, MS Bike Rally.

Any takers?

Yeah, I dont really care what people think of the bike. I have an army buddy who is actually from there so camping might not even be an issue I guess they are allowed to let something like up to nineteen people stay in their yard over the festival by law. I dont want to go out there alone if I cant find a way to secure my gear at the campground.
I really hope I can find somebody to ride with out there, its hard to imagine that many people all in one place anywhere in South Dakota. ;D
This sure did make me want to go a lot more though.

Tincanman and I have been several times and he usually goes every year and we've both gone with our S40's and have always had a really good response to them. Every time we have also ran into other people riding them and you pretty much instantly hit it off with them.

If it is still hosted by the cheating, thieving stinking liars from the CMA, it isn't worth the trip.

Been twice, once before the CMA took over, once after. Before was fun, after sucked.

Big Sturgis in SD? Y'all can keep it. Went in 93, once was more than enough.

It was cancelled for a year or two, now it is back on.

I'd like to go get my bike "Blessed" ... (Better than getting it "Dammed"  ;D   ..  ;D ;D ;D

Let's see :

Anybody else up for a ridding weekend ?

Speed limit on the parkway is 50mph so just "idle-ing along" on the big singles would be kinda nice !

August is Hot and Dry in the South . ;)

I think I may have talked myself into it allready  ::)

What's with the trashing of the CMA ?

The local CMA groop is "Too Good " if anything !
    They drive senceable
They do fund-raisers for needy folks
They Laugh a lot , but try not to hurt other peoples fellings

Mabby you meet up with  a different groop ?   But remember no matter how hard we try ... nobody is perfect or no-groop either  :-?

Funds disappearing that were earmarked for the community...

CMA members competing in the bike games on trikes, in events designed to test 2 wheeled handling skills...

Miniature video and still remote triggered cameras in the showers...

Non-CMA raffle and 50/50 drawing tickets removed from the containers...

Convicted felons on night time "roving security patrols"...

Thefts of fuel, supplies, camping gear, saddlebags, riding gear...

Motorcycles vandalized...

Supposed to be a family friendly, children welcome event. Who were the first ones to have nude (and lewd) women on their motorcycles, in the public eye? Give you 3 guesses, and it was not any of the well behaved 1%ers in attendance...

Bunch of scared little sheeple playing dress up.

I have full faith that the good Lord woin't let that kinda behavor go on long.
Could be the bunch you refered to have allready been purged .   I hope so anyway.

Doin't let the actions of the few you knew , poison all your future.   I'm with ya on Judge-ing.  The scum-suckers your refered to must have been demon posessied.   Mabby thats why the event disappeared for a while ...

So if its back ...

Lets go see if its "Reformed" or in need of a tounge lashing possibly even a exoristism of sorts.    Lets also be carefull  we doin't find what we're looking for "Just becouse we're looking for it".

Some things Just need to be done !  ;)

Mapquest tells me that my trip to Sturgis would be ...1242.54 miles, 18 hrs 58 mins.  Yikes!

That might have to be a trip I make when I retire.....or win the Lottery and retire early!

If I was a few hours away.....I would go at least once.  I have wanted to see what their dirt races and hillclimb are like.

Which CMA chapter was that WD ?

And just so we are on the same page,  by CMA do you mean the Christian Motorcyclists Association ?

Were they wearing these, and ONLY these colors on the back of their vests ?

Yep, them. No idea on the host chapter, that was over a decade ago.

And no, not exaggerating, the last time I went it was a horror show.

I'll stick with the "21 and Over" rallies. Lisa and I are perfectly comfortable with social nudity, and people getting frisky in the open air doesn't phase either of us as long as there are no children around.

But a rally run by a supposedly Christian group, billed as "family friendly", being anything but in reality... pass, thanks anyway.

If it was CMA members behaving like that they would have been yanked from the group in a hurry.  That is not good at all and is not tolerated.

I finally got-a-round to downloading some pictures of Daytona durning bike week.    I stayed at the ABATE campground just a little south of Daytona and we had a campfire every night ... that was the best part .   At the campground there were a couple hundred biker people and every kinda of bike you could think of and  everybody got allong great , we had campfire stuff every night , but I still doin't believe most of the stories folks were telling. (Heck I doin't even believe the ones I told)  ;D

There was company "Reps" from everything on wheels there giving away stuff with the company name on it.   At the Speedway test rides from all the manufactures were to be had if you'd stand in line long enough.    (Thousands of Bikers were there)   .   Any kinda of food you can think of ..  Took me about 5 hrs. to walk through the maze - but it was Good stuff and Good people to be around.     Yahama introduced their new 400 air-cooled single that looks a lot like a S-40 (real eye catcher)  :)

Here's a picture of one corner of one of the parking areas near J.P.Cycles mall.

More pictures

There's no helmet law in Florida , it felt kinda weard to pass a law enforestment with-out a helmet on and still "Grin" about the ride !  ::)

I moved to Daytona last May and got a 2011 S40 this February. Riding Main Street with 100,000 (or so) other bikes is quite an experience. Lots of positive comments on being on an "old school" thumper, no negatives. Love my bike, love this town! :)

Wish I'd know you were in the area , It would have been neat to find a S-40 in the groop !  :)

Mabby next year ?     :-?    perhaps some of the other too !

Biketoberfest? Maybe?

Tell you what, put together a ride for BOTH Little Sturgis Rallies, the crappy one in Mississippi and the good adults (21 and over) only one in Kentucky if it is gong to happen this year. Let's see who decides to show up... The one in MS is only a 3 hour slow ride the back way from the house.

If BOTH Savages are roadworthy and Lisa is up for it, I'll consent to give the MS version another chance.
