Title: ATF Fork Oil Options
Post by Coaxial on 03/17/14 at 11:17:24

Hey Guys,

I am trying to find a suitable fork oil. I searched and found some topics but I cannot discern which of these ATF fluids are 15w thick.

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/automotive/oils-fluids/transmission-fluids-treatments.html?count=32;i=1;q=*;viewMode=grid;x1=c.cat-level-1;q1=Automotive;x2=c.cat-level-2;q2=Oils+%26+Fluids;x3=c.cat-level-3;q3=Transmission+Fluids+%26+Treatments;site=ct

Do any of these work?

BTW would love to use regular fork oil but they seem to only have 10w.

Any standard ATF will work just fine.  They are close enough that a little difference won't hurt a thing.  They lubricate, they damp, they have anti-foam agents and seal conditioners.  This is not a race bike...it is a cruiser.  Don't bother with a synthetic or anything fancy....just plain old ATF.

If you wanna know about ATF then you're gonna have to ask WD
or look up what he's said.

Dexron 3 works fine. If you weigh 240 pounds or more, use Type F.

Drain the fork oil currently in place. Collapse the tubes into the sliders. Fill the tubes, all the way. Extend the tubes, drop the springs back in, install on your bike.

Forget about for the next 4-5 years, unlike fork oil, ATF lasts a long time.

@WD:

Thanks for that, I will look out for type 3. Most ATF jugs dont contain that information but i will continue to try looking.

I am only 148 pounds.

Does the Type F not compress as easily as Dexron?  Is it thicker or something?

fork or hydraulic oil doesn't compress much... it ooses thru holes.

A bit thicker, and it will swell the fork's internal o-rings, tightening up any passages.

Remember fancy/expensive B&M Trick Shift "racing" ATF? To give you "harder launches and firmer shifts"? Relabeled Type F sold to guys running General Mistake Corporation slushomatics...  ;D

Type F is the standard ATF for Ford C4/C6 and a common choice for Mopar 727 (which originally came with Dexron/Meron).

HD30 motor oil works fine as well. But bear in mind, the Savage fork is an obsolete component, they are junk when they ship by current standards. Late 1940s technology.
