With the kickstand down it will die in gear. If it is happening with the kickstand up, you may have a problem with that circuit.

Its not weird to start it up, stand it up, pop it in first & then kick the stand up, it just wont let you do it that way,,

Removed my switch and jumped, most annoying thing ever having to have the kickstand up to start the bike. Getting rid of the clutch start safety too.

I always get on the bike, then first put the kick stand up, turn on the key and fuel petcock, set the fuel enrichment....then hit the starter.  I learned to do this before they started putting the safety equipment on, and it is now a routine.

Remembering to put the kick stand up is very important.....get in a habit of doing it before you put the bike in gear.....or better yet even before you start the bike.
