Those are captured rocket planes- technology that the allies did not have.
That is a photo of the five that were shipped to the US that are mentioned in the wikipedia article.

and never repeated.
dam things would blow up sitting on the ground.

there was one variant where they installed automatically fired motars in the wings.  the 1st test was  to fly under a banner and all motars fired at once also launching the canopy.

I saw a show where they talked about these rockets/planes.  The fuel and oxidizers were so dangerous they would not allow the tanker trucks anywhere near each other.  The fuel truck would fill the plane, then it would leave and the oxidizer truck would do the same.  The pilots wore rubber suits and they would dissolve from being exposed to the fuel and oxidizer.  After each flight they had to flush the plane out with water to remove all traces of the fuel and oxidizer before attempting to fuel it again.

The rocket planes could see the incoming bombers and take off and intercept them for a brief period...then they would run out of fuel and they had to make a hasty retreat.  If they did not get away fast enough the fighter escorts would follow them down and shoot at them while they tried to find a place to land.

It would've been smarter for these to target the fighter escort, come in with fighters for the bombers.

The rockets were either on or off.  If they left them on during level flight they broke mach 1 and tumbled outta the sky.

From what I remember from the program I watched, the Germans did not have any advance notice the Bombers were coming, and they could not scramble their German fighters fast enough to get them in the air....then get to altitude and catch up with them without a long chase.  By the time they would catch the Bomberrs the German fighters did not have enough fuel to fight and return to the airfield.

The idea was that the little Rocket planes could quickly catch the squadron, engage them and take a couple of runs at the Bombers, then return to the same area and land.  As it turns out they were not too effective.....but they were cutting edge rocket stuff!
