Title: Quick spark plug question
Post by rl153 on 03/07/14 at 09:12:02

I just bought an NGK DPR8EA9 for my 2005. It didn't have the little cap threaded onto the end of the spark plug where the wire connects ,just the thread. Is that the way it's supposed to come thru? Thanks!

Thaks, that's good! Another thing, whats the correct way to remove the spark plug wire, just pull it off?

You grab the wire down where it connects to the plug.  You will feel at the end of the wire.

Just before you turn off the engine or you'll induce corrosion   ;D

I'm going to try to change my spark plug. The bike (2005) has the original plug in it. After I blow the dirt out, do you think I should spray liquid wrench around the plug? Also ,I can change the plug without taking the silver head cover off ,if I remove the tank, right? Also, what  size deep socket is the original plug ,and what size is the NGK? Thanks!

Should be 18mm

In the past people have reported not being able to get the 18mm in the spark plug hole, if you have your stock tool kit then look in there for a thin walled socket like wrench

I didn't start yet JOG,but I plan to do that.Do you think I should spray penetrating oil down there after I blow itg out? I plan to use the tool from the bike kit ,like someone suggested.I'm  waitng to burn off some of my gas ,because I don't want to disconnect the speedo cable, just lay the tank on top of  the frame out of the way. Also is there anything tricky about disconnecting  the electrical jack on the tank? I know I ask alot of questions, but it seems if I don't ,there are unwanted surprises. Thanks!

P-Oil not needed unless it's stuck.

connector can be tough, a big screwdriver helps.

I'd be more worried the tank will fall then whatever your worried about.

Thanks Vers, that helps. Is the speedometer cable easy to disconnect, and at what point do you disconnect it the tank or the motor? Forgive me if I have this confused.

I disconnect at motor, under tank hard to get to.

BTW, some recommend anti-seize on sparky threads - although I don't do it, but I would if it were sticky.

I'm definately going to get some anti seize.

Before ya pull the tank, prepare a place to lay it down so the speedo cable wont be cranked too hard. Have a friend handy, first time, its important. Youve got to win the fight with the connector under the tank w/o messing it up. You do NOT want it to vibrate loose. That has happened after people Go Rilla'd it up & ruined the clip that keeps it together.Bike shuts off if that connector lets loose.. Once youve freed it once, youll be okay. TRY to win it alone.. IF you can, then next time you wont need backup. I did it alone, I wished I had backup, tho I didnt drop the tank. Sitting the tank sideways is asking for trouble you dont want. Lay a rag across the starter & close off any holes the O-ring can drop thru.. THAT has been a problem for several.,.dont let that happen,.,A small pair of channel locks is handy here. use a rag so ya dont scar the connection up.
I didnt like the pressure needed to get the tank off & back on so I "adjusted the rubber pucks size.
Also, the petcock will ( unless its a Raptor) hit the frame. Tape the frame & slap the tank sideways & lift. OR, drain the tank & pull the petcork,,Id pull the thing & go back with a Raptor unit. FROM the yammy shop, not a Chinese knockoff..

I got a raptor petcock already ,but I'm concerned about pulling the electrical connector. You say there is an o ring inside it?

o-ring is in the speedo cable.  don't loose it, you can't order them alone.  and end up replacing with an ill fitting o-ring.
