Hi folks,

according to the thread: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1288911670/5 stator should have a notch that would allow to take off torque limiter. There is no such notch on my donor engine. Do I understand correctly, that the only way how I can take off limiter is by removing stator? And it is hold by 6 allen bolts (position 12 on page 119 of Clymer manual)?

yep, some stators don't have the knotch, I have one too.

the stator is held on by the bolt in the center, and you need a puller.

those 6 bolts hold the starter gear.

Alternator's got 2 parts... the stator part, has the wound coils,... the other part is the rotor...
Sounds like your rotor doesn't have a notch...
If the gear won't pass... you need make it pass...
By notching that rotor, or pulling it...
Maybe both... :-/...

Sorry for confusion with terms, in the original thread rotor was called stator, which surprised me, but I decided to keep terms :).

Is it safe to make a notch? Wouldn't this lead to rotor disbalance?

You'd need to make an Identical notch on the opposite side to keep it balanced.

Remember it's magnetic, those filings will stick to the rotor.

If you remove the starter gear (it pulls straight off the shaft) you will be able to jiggle the torque limiter gear off without removing the rotor. You will have to move it up and down etc. but it will come off without the "notch". At least I was able to remove and replace the limiter on two engines without removing the rotor.

Thanks a lto for your help folks. Torque limiter refused to get off 2003 engine so I had to do small notch using angle grinder. Rotor on 1986 engine seems to be slightly smaller. Stock gear went off without efforts and torque limiter could be installed without additional actions. I installed idle gear from 2003 engine as well since I noticed, that it had different height comparing with idle gear from 1986. Assembled everything back, bike fired up without issues.
