Title: Help. White Smoke
Post by Loud3r on 02/21/14 at 13:21:51

So Here's the Bike:

2001 Suzuki Savage, 5,000 miles, chain drive conversion, raptor petcock, and thats about it. so, have had the bike out twice now, first time absoutely no issues, except idle seemed a little low. i tightened the thumb screw up a little on the carb to raise the idle, got it where it was good and left it. Rode the bike to work this morning, was running late and she wasnt wanting to fire, so i bump started her, fired right up and rode off, didnt notice any smoke, but i didnt really look back, i was in a hurry.

Went to grab a snack, started her up just fine, made it like 30 feet and  noticed she billowed white smoke.  parked her adjusted the thumb screw back to where it was,  restarted her, still smoked a litte, seemed after a couple more throttle twists the smoke was starting to clear.

Also should state, ive seen a decent amount of oil around the lower part of the head, seems a little excessive, anything i can do without tearing her down and replacing the head gasket? (pretty sure thats where the oil is coming from. also looked into the sightglass, and noticed some either white smoke inside there above the oil line, or some condensation(?) I live about 15 minutes from my work. Am i safe to ride her home?

the PO might have changed it right before he sold it. I havent changed the oil since ive had it, maybe a week. before today and yesterday (both about 15 minute rides to work, and 15 back after, the only rides it had were a couple down the block really fast. i started her up everyday though.

White smoke over oil could be anything... water, gas, possible.
you swapped out for the raptorcock, but unless you turn it off, carb can still leak into the cylinder and down into the case.  Make sure you cut it off.

I know it's been wet up there, but I wouldn't expect to see it boiling off the oil w/in a few minutes of lighting her up.

A small percent of gas gets into the oil normally, if you're running choke all the time, you may just have a little extra.

Keep an eye on your oil level, if it went up noticeably I'd change it.  We have only 2 qts and if the level goes up a mark... that's about 25% diluted.

She seems to be running ok, still have the oil leak, cant telll if its from my header, or from the headgasket.  one issue though

She still has to be push started in the morning when it's cold. any suggestions?

The thumb screw is the idle. Its common to need to adjust it while riding. I always had to raise it up ( the idle) when first starting out, even on hot days. After riding 15 or 20 minutes, the engine was running great & duriong that time I had slowly dropped the idle adjust down, You Gotsta keep that thing idlint at 1,000 or so RPM, or the cam wont oil right, & you wont like what that does, at all,.,.

If you changed to the Raptor, then maybe the old petcork leaked gas into the oil,, oils cheap,. engines, well,, they arent, If someone else put the oil in, you dont know what they used, really,, so, Id probably just dump it & start over. If you know the filter is new, then leave it, not enough of anything in there to hurt anything.

How old is the battery?... :-/...

Thats another thing I do with stuff I buy.. if I am not sure of the health of the battery Im gonna put a fresh one in, & these things are very snotty about the voltage needed for starting. Theyll spin over & it sounds like its spinnin over fast enough to fire on up, but it wont,, & then when ya DO get it goin, the charge circuitry isnt just maintaining a battery, its workin its guts out,, risking more repairs, IMO.
Check the water, put it on the bench, charge it up nice & easy, just a coupla amps,, I have a 6 amp,, its the lowest it goes, not the best but so far I dont think Ive killed one with it,, then take it into town for a Free load test at a car parts house,.If its not healthy, look at a Big Crank,, kinda spendy, but they last & they dont have water in them, its a sealed up, gel type battery.

Already have a small sealed batt, my batt box has been moved lower. i hardwired a little tender to it, and maybe because i havent hooked her up in a few days she doesnt have the juice to cold start. I'll throw her on the tender tonight, and see if anything changes. tomorrows my fiirst full day off, gonna take her out and rip it up a little bit, 15 minute rides arnt enough to gauge if shes being nice or not. been playing with the thumb screw all day lol. thanks for the great advice everyone!

I had a white smoke issue on start up on mine after I worked on it. I tightened my exhaust bolts to the engine and adjusted the idle air screw a little and it cleared up. I'm not sure what caused it, but I don't think it is an "end of the world" issue.
