Title: Savage "Plug/Cap" Leak
Post by NorCalRider on 02/18/14 at 14:17:32

I replaced the plug/cap this weekend. Took a long time since I haven't done this before.

My hats off to Savage_Greg, Versi, Digger, OldFeller and all others who added valuable information to the ongoing thread. I could not have done it without all your help.

So, the bike is not leaking anymore but since then there is a loud ticking sound coming from it (underneath the head cover, possibly the cam chain). I am attaching the sound file and will appreciate if anyone can help me figure this out. It is very likely I messed something up when putting the headcover back on.

The bike is '99 stock except Raptor petcock and had 5,750 miles on it.

Thanks.

try readjusting the valves.
If 1 (R vs. L) is slightly tighter than the other... you'll get a tap.

Since you remove the head to replace or reseat the plug, does the amount of sealant you use make a difference in the gap for your valve clearance?

yes, that's why you need to readjust afterwards.
