Title: 16 inch rear rim?
Post by Mario Verasso on 02/15/14 at 16:35:08

I want to run a Shinko Classic 240 or 270 style Motorcycle Tire. But just can't find one in 15 inch.... Is there a 16 inch rear spoke rim that bolts right up? Yes, I have decided to go with a chain.

spoked bolt up?  no.

but you can get alloy wheels from a gs550 to work.

Mario, I was wanting those same tires, too. I did find 15" Duro Classics on a Japanese market place website similar to Amazon, but the shipping was more than the tire so I think it would have been around $225-250 to get it here. Just thought I'd throw that out there if one wanted to spend the money and keep the 15" rear. Heres the link:

You will have to check whether they are wire or alloy, chain or shaft, but the following had 16" rear wheels.

85 GS450GS  4.60x16
80-82 GS450L  4.60x16
83 GS450L  120/90-16
85-88 GS450L  120/90-16
83-86 GS550L  130/90-16  (this is the standard tire for the sportster)
83 GR650  130/90-16
81-83 GS650GL  130/90-16
80-81 GS750L  130/90-16

The best solution would be to relace the hub with an 16 inch rim..

Thanks guys for the input... I knew a few of you guys would know... By the way thanks for the Duro "classic" Steed tire info... I will be looking into it. I have seen XS650 with 15" rims running similar tires.

These people "WILL NOT SHIP TO USA". But I may be able to get it shipped to an APO in Kuwait or Germany, then shipped to here. If enough people want them? It would make it easier & maybe save a few bucks on shipping...

Has anyone tried running a 1978 Kawasaki KZ 650 Rear Wheel on their savage? I found one on Ebay, 16X3.00 with a drum brake. I think the GS mags are ugly. Just asking since the kawi's have nicer looking mags?

You can go to Mike's XS online and get a 2.5 X 16 drilled alloy, 36 spoke rim and spoke set for $135.00-$145 depending on what style rim you want. It will fit your hub because it is the same diameter as the XS650. I just did the same with my rear wheel but in the 18"-worked great. I assembled it myself and had it trued locally (some bicycle shops will true a motorcycle wheel). Will not work in the front because the XS hub is larger in diameter than the Suzuki wheel.

Anything with GS or GL at the end are shaft drive and won't work.

Hey guys, first time post! I just picked up a 2000 savage with 8900 miles on it. Some small little leaks here and there but kicks a$$ otherwise. I just want to confirm as I have been reading ALL night, that we can swap out the rear wheel with an 83 GS550L rear wheel? Im fine with a little mods to make it work, but I think I read on a post that someone said it was a direct swap from the drum to the sprocket/hub...Any info would be great so I can finally get one ordered!!! Thanks so much, this forum is awesome with tons of info!  :)
