Title: Are these the right replacement shocks?
Post by B.J. and Jo on 02/12/14 at 09:39:05

I looked at the Progressive Suspension site and found 11 inch Series 412 rear shocks, part number:412-4233C for a 2009 VS800Intruder/S50, are these the right shock that can be used on our 2009 S40 for replacement/upgrade. Thanks, the FAQ was kinda vauge and was using different part number from a different source! :)

Pretty sure that's the right shock...make sure you check the spring rate. I bought mine off CL...they were 11.5 and for a harley...softest spring rate. I weigh 150 and have them set on the second setting...just about perfect.
p.s. i did buy shims from progressive (since they were for a harley) for some outlandish price to allow them to fit the bike but they bolted up just fine.

Thanks!  I might look at the 11.5 inch Heavy Duty 412 series: 412-4236C as we ride "2 up" all the time, I'm 230 and wife is 130 lbs so it might be ok to go to the 11.5 inch as the combined weight should off set the .5 inch, LOL, well at least I think so, again thanks! :)

You'll want 11 1/2 " shocks especially since you are riding double. You wouldn't gain much for your money with an 11" shock.

Progressive has a table you can download that has all the model numbers with lengths and spring rates.  So do your research and try and get some more opinions.  Here is what I remember but be sure to check them.

Some on this forum report using the Progressive 412-4201 which has a spring rate of 115/155 lbs per inch and is listed as an Intruder replacement.  I think the Harley Sportster 412-4006 spring rate is lighter, about 90/130 lbs per inch for standard duty.

I like a gentle ride and am average weight and never ride double so I like the lighter Sportster spring rate.  Like Buba, I use the second setting.
