Title: Linux distros resolve Amazon Prime Instant Video
Post by Oldfeller on 02/10/14 at 07:33:21

As of today a Flash Update that didn't apparently come from Adobe showed up to be downloaded to my Linux Mint.

After permitting the update, Amazon Prime Instant Video is working again on Linux Mint Firefox.

It is also running again on Linux Mint Chrome browser.

If it stays good,
then perhaps the FOSS folks have gotten a handle on some DRM issues and Flash issues that had been sticking in their craw for the last 4 months.

:)

Now this particular news item is not earthshaking by any means, but it indicates that Google Android OS is moving towards taking up some Windows functionality using Wine calls.

Run this forward in your mind and you might begin to see Android as an ARM based OS picking up the ability to run more and more full Windows programs.

Wine is basically proxy for library and system calls. To be able to run windows binaries on arm android you would need windows arm binaries.

This is all true.

However, look at the direction and intent of these Android moves.

Microsoft failed to make a real ARM version of their OS last year as promised.   ARM processors are quickly becoming full PC processor equivalents, but lack the full  service OS from MS to run old Windows programs such as Word and Excel.

If Android can run Wine well, why then folks can run up through Word/Excel 2010 with no sweat on these new larger screen ARM chipped Android all in ones.

This puts pressure on Microsoft to come across with real ARM support in Win 9/10 or else be eased aside in the new ARM based world by Android and Ubuntu.

When somebody else can offer one generation back Windows Office and various other "business necessary" programs on ARM then the pressure on Microsoft goes up accordingly.
