Title: My First Savage (Build)
Post by Loud3r on 02/07/14 at 16:04:53

How's it going everyone? Been following this site for a while, and have been looking at savages for the past couple months. Looking to make my return to the street for the first time in 4 years thanks in part to a 2002 CBR600F4I, My highly developed 18 year old brain at the time, and the fact i could ride a lot better than i could think. Ended up getting in quite a bit of trouble with the man over this, and now I'm finally eligible to get my license.

Found a Savage I liked, 2001, 5000 miles, the guy started a little work on it, got the chain drive conversion, different fender, turn signals and a few other odds and ends. Picked it up for $1300. Gonna bring it home either this Sunday, or Next Sunday, and the second i get it home the cover is coming off the side and I'm checking that Cam chain tensioner. Probably going to remove the shiny top cover off the motor.

Here's how she sits right now:

http://i59.tinypic.com/mrzewj.jpg

Trying to decide what way to go with it. I've had a 79 Sj650 that was cafe racer'ed out, and i loved it. but as I'm getting older and more concious of the man, Or maybe it's just my upbringing, but the idea of a bobber has become more and more appealing.  I picked a bike that wasn't necessarily the fastest, so instead of focusing on dumping godly amounts of money into it trying to make it break 115 (which would put me right about infront of those flashing lights again) I think im gonna be focusing on making it a one of a kind.

Couple references that really turned me onto the savage, and maybe a couple different paths i could take:

TruckinDuc's Savage: The ultimate drool bike. I've stalked the pages of this build probably for the past three weeks, to the point the old lady is getting jealous of his bike, and maybe for good reason  :P

http://www.customfighters.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/DSC_2830-CF.jpg

And of course, everyone has seen the Ryca RR-1 Bobber. Through all my searching though, I have yet to find a single review on the thing. Anyone actually ridden one?  Any thoughts? This this is gonna be mostly for around town, but I'd like the ability to jump on the freeway and head up to Reno now and then (about 117 miles). Everything I've read, they can handle it, but not comfortably.

Would love to get to know everyone, and advice and experience is always welcome, I'm a young guy without a father, Or too much technical skill, but i know my way around a little.  so this is gonna be all trial and error over experience. Bear with me here guys..its gonna be a savage ride!

The only thing I would change on that bike are the bars.

Title: Re: My First Savage (Build)
Post by Loud3r on 02/07/14 at 18:28:09

Will eventually change the bars, the seat is the one thing that has got me thinking...ugy. lol. it just doesnt look right. when i get it Sunday, im sure some seat reshaping is gonna get taken care of for now, moneys tight but i might find something to work. going to go with a springer solo seat, and everything is gonna get painted. Hopefully I have the time to get up there to grab it sunday, if not itll have to wait till next week :(

Title: Re: My First Savage (Build)
Post by Johnny57 on 02/07/14 at 20:25:54

Seat is sitting like that because frame turns up on back of seat.  When you do a "Blue Collar Bobber" conversion you cut the frame to eliminate that "hump".  You are one seat away from having a pretty nice little bobber.  With only 5000 miles on it if it is not rattling I would not tear into the engine until I had to.  $1300 looks like a pretty good deal.  I like "broomstick" drag bars.

Post by Loud3r on 02/07/14 at 21:05:50

I know about the frame rails, thinking of doing something temporary for now with the seat, it's going to be my daily rider, so downtime on it will usually be Sunday's or Wednesday's, my days off.

For the permanent fix, I'm probaby going to cut the rails, get a solo seat bracket/tank mount from ryca, and go with the larger 3 gal tank. also looking into maybe going with a sportster style tank, always liked the shape for bobbers. thanks for all the input guys!

Well,.. yer' a young man, and you've learned a bit of a lesson...
...but, don't think for a second that Trunkinduc's bike wouldn't get some police attention... (ohhh! they'll be on that like white on rice)... ;D...

If you're new to wrenching... I'd recommend that you just ride your new bike, and make one change at a time...
No need to jump into a full build...
That bike looks pretty sweet already...
It's easier to learn a step at a time, and you'll get some ridin' fun as you go...

Best luck, and welcome either way... we will be happy to add to your confusion with opposing opinions and advice, on almost any changes you decide to make...
;D...

I've got decent mechanical skills, i might be undershooting that a little bit. I started with a 1979 honda 125, mean little thing, and rebuiding the top end was one of the first challenges i took on. have quite a few bikes since then, and the only thing I'm not too familiar with is welding,  milling or machining pieces, but cutting, grinding, and bolting are all in my skillset.

Not too worried about the attention from the cops, this will be the first time I'll be able to get pulled over without a worry in a loooong time. let em stop me, then only place im going to be opening her up too much is the back roads.

Will love all the condescending and heated advice and argument I'm gonna get. And I might just listen to all of you, or none of you, depending on the topic :P

Feels good to finally join a community united by a bike, never had this too much with any of my other steel horses. sure is a good following!

If youre not a 100% qualified welder, then when you join tubes, put a smaller tube inside to bolster the joint, Id probably do that if I thot my welds were NASA quality. Youde be surprised at the "machining" that can get done with a drill press & a grinder.

Lol Can't wait to get my hands dirty. with the way the weather is looking, I'm not gonna be able to bring her home till next sunday. let's hope it clears up enough!!

That's a great looking bike for 1300.00! I'm jealous!
Serwobot doles out pretty good stuff here.  I'd check the REAL basics: Cam chain tensioner and petcock first. Chances are the previous owner might have done some carb mods with the new exhaust etc.  But, yeah, ride it, get in tune with its idiosyncracies and glitches THEN start wrenching. Welcome to the forum!

Title: Re: My First Savage (Build)
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 02/10/14 at 11:01:50

I like it as is.. You got it for $1,300.00? Good deal, I say.. MIte wanna add a mudflap to the front fender, maybe something on the rear, after a ride thru a wet spot, or maybe it wont Skunk Stripe ya,.hafta wait & see.. I dont think I could take the handlebars, but as long as its tuned & runs good, it already looks good & has the chain on it, so you can mess with gearing if youre planning a long trip.

Title: Re: My First Savage (Build)
Post by Loud3r on 02/10/14 at 11:33:50

Yeah he already took care of the chain conversion, and there is a rear fender, let's hope its long enough, i plan on changing it eventually but it can stay for now. lol well see how it goes. thinking of removing the front fender if i can figure out a way to keep the skunktail off me. more to come soo. bike will be here in T-minus 6 days. the longest week ever now begins And yeah, it's a steal at 1300, and the guys got alot into it already. Only reason he's selling is because he picked up a Honda 969 for like 2000, so he's passing on the love

The fenderless front wheel will throw all sorts of stuff in your face and chest.  I speak from experience.

how bad is it? im used to motocross, mud, dirt rocks, water, ect. was thinking of making something too help catch all the crap but still leave it fenderless up front

I bobbed mine and took the front fender off.  Even an inch wide patch of water in my gutter coming off my driveway will spray up the front of my face shield on my helmet. I live in Phoenix so rain isn't much of an issue, but I'm thinking of a front fender again.

Title: Re: My First Savage (Build)
Post by Loud3r on 02/10/14 at 21:06:11

hmmm. I think what I'll do since I live in Cali, is modify the stock one before paint, and just spray it as well. leave it on for the winter, take it off in the summer! And also the carb has been rejetted for the new pipe.

The bike also came with a jet kit, a spare carb, the old bars, and the stock exhaust. Still counting down the hours till i get to go pick up my baby. Hopefully will get my test for my license taken next wednesday. wont have much of a chance to ride her till then, cept for maybe one good pass down my dead end street (:

No front fender.....you better wear a full face helmet and shield.

Last summer I rode without a front fender as I just didn't have time to get one made.  I had changed the fork yokes and the new ones were narrower - so a stock fender was no longer an option.

On the Dragon Run event last year Oldfellor, old-rider and I headed to run the Dragon and we got caught in a rainstorm that just kept beating on us. Everytime we stopped and let it pass and the roads dry....10 minutes down the road we would ride right back into it.  Turns out that we were following the storm but with the mountains and overcast it was not possible to see which direction it was headed.  I found that without a fender the front wheel would throw a 1" wide strip of water into the air and I would get sprayed by it.  I could see on my visor that the spray would come right between my eyes if I was centered on the bike.....and that strip also soaked my chest right down the zipper of my jacket.  At one point we reached a spot just out of Waynesville where a road construction project had been going on earlier in the day before the rains came.....and as we hit the section of road that had the clay dirt on the road.....I got a 1" wide orange/brown stripe (skunk stripe?) right down the center of my visor, and a matching stripe down my gray mesh jacket.  The rest of the year I was able to avoid riding in the rain.....as I am a fair weather rider when at home.  Sometimes at night I can see the front fender throwing small pieces of gravel up into the beam of the headlight while I am riding.

If you only intend to ride on fair weather days you can get by without a front fender.  If you intend on riding on days when the weather is "iffy" or riding on multiple day trips.....or in the mountains where the short storms can come daily.....you better have a front fender.

Summer's here are usually completely rain free, winters can be sketch. Ill probably be going with a full face, but regaurdless you guys have convinced me to run the fender in the winter

Some say that the fender helps front end stability. if you do away with it , you may wish to consider a fork brace of some description.

Title: Re: My First Savage (Build)
Post by Loud3r on 02/11/14 at 15:02:01

have already been looking at fork braces(: thanks for the input though, totally forgot to mention that

Title: Re: My First Savage (Build)
Post by old_rider on 02/11/14 at 19:02:02

You could install a minimal fork brace that could accept 3 or 4 bolts for an attachable bracket for a fender or for a small fender. That way on a trip you could take it with you and install it when needed or when you think you "might" need it.

boy scout motto, "be prepared" ;)

Well Guys, she's home! got her home and safe no problems(: Little bit of a pickle, though. When i picked her up, The PO cold started her(i checked the header for any sort of warmth, no problems, fired right up. after the two 1/2 hour drive home, pulled her out of the truck and tried to fire her. she turned over, but wouldnt fire.  after a couple trys, she started clicking. assuming I've got a gimpy battery issue? gonna buy a battery tender tonight, and hook her up. might try bumb starting when i get off work. here's a couple looky loos for now, will get some better pics after work. Any suggestions? gonna look through the forum as well

Looks good! Keep us posted eh?  Yeah the starter click sounds like a low battery voltage.
Looks as tho the PO might have went with a smaller battery when he did the semi-bob job, make sure the crankin' amps are good for the savage.

Title: Re: My First Savage (Build)
Post by Loud3r on 02/13/14 at 10:34:11

battery is a tiny little thing, its on the stock emissions plate down low. the "battery box" is holding most of the electrical.  Also the front is lowered 2" and he just had them rebuilt. I'm getting kind of scared, there has to be something wrong with this thing for the price. call me skeptical, lol.

Will grab a batt tender on the way home from work, and plug her up. Anyone see any downsides to bumpstarting the savage, besides a heaving lung? suggested amps for the battery tender?

Title: Re: My First Savage (Build)
Post by Dave on 02/13/14 at 10:51:43

I tried bump starting mine once......and I had no luck and all I could manage was to slide the back tire across the pavement.  I weigh 156 pounds and in the lower gears the tire would slide, in the higher gears I might get a pop and no success at pulling in the clutch fast enough to keep the engine running. My wife and I were on a flat asphalt parking lot and "No Joy".

Battery tenders are fine for maintaining a battery - but most cannot charge a battery that is dead or run down below a certain point.  The circuitry in them that monitors the voltage does not recognize a discharged battery properly, and as a result it does not switch into the "charge" mode.  Even some of the newer chargers won't work on dead batteries....which is kind of useless.  If you do use a charger or tender, don't charge with anything above 1 or 2 amps.

Post by Loud3r on 02/13/14 at 11:32:48

you wanna stay under 1-2amps? and im about 150, but i used to own a 1991 RM250 that had to be bump started every time, and let me tell you, in the bottom of a muddy valley in the middle of a trail, bumpstarting a 2stroke monster is not an ideal.  and iv'e bump started my cbr600 a few times. Like to think I've gotten it down pretty well. :P don't know if thats a good thing or not. More info to come soon.

Thanks for everyones help! Got her hardwired for a battery tender now,(after breaking the lead on the hot....so lame. got everything buttoned up though, she turns over like a champ and sounds amazing with the jardine exhaust

I'm glad for you that you got your bike:) your pictures reminds me when i got mine... for the front fender i have to say that after a summer with little rain (by which i obviously got caught every time) i decided for the winter to put back the front fender but i painted it flat black so it's not that visible... for me it's a good compromise, but as soon as the summer is back, the fender goes back on the shelf 'till next winter...

Gonna be slow moving on her in the next month, just got the license back, and that was a godly amount of money. Got her insured, and registered. Battery tender is hardwired, adding some license plate light bolts tonight, but man, she sure does ride and run like a champ now that I've got all the bugs worked out of her.

Things to look forward to:

Custom box for the electrical (I've got an insane idea, but I'm not ready to give it away)

Bigger peanut tank

Solo seat

Removal of the chrome covers

Paintjob

and some other odds and ends, not all in that order. But for now, It's time to get some miles and enjoy the new bike. I'm loving being back on the road again, and very happy with my choice in the savage. It gets all kinds of looks and questions, love the way she sounds, and Very torquey with the chain conversion, exhaust, cone filter, and regear. Not so fast that she'll get me in trouble, but just fast enough to have a little fun(:

So got a little done on my bike today, and even helped the old man with his. Added a lisence plate light, fixed the rattle from the second heat shield, cleaned up some of the wiring, and added a tool roll. Then helped tune the carb on my dad's new bike, the one on the right. 113ci S&S motor, man that thing makes such a great sound. Even got a good little bit of riding in between the showers, And she sure does sound amazing without any rattle. new pics coming soon, but here are a couple I've gotten recently.

Can't wait to not be broke, so i can get a little more into it.

You got a good start there young dude, and a good deal on the bike as well.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you do.
I was in your neighborhood not long ago when I picked up a new wife and carried her off to SC and then OK.  It was a bit of a culture shock for her since she was born and had lived in Sac for her entire life.  Her reprograming is going well though, so all is good.

Gotten a little farther with her, figured I'd show some of the fruits of labor.

Painted her up real nice like, got into the carb, and found they removed the spacer and put one thin ass metal washer (now i know where the white smoke was coming from) put in two #4 nylons, throttle response is a little crappy now, will pull out one of them tonight when i get home.

Gonna pick up the plug i ordered on my lunchbreak, hopefully get her installed tomorrow, stop that leak up.

New seat, and maybe the Ryca bobber exhaust. anyone have any feedback? they look awesome, but for the price i bet they sound nothing like my jardine
