Title: Any other motorcycles like savage?
Post by Kirill Timofeev on 02/06/14 at 20:44:27

Just curious are there any other motorcycles that are similar to savage? Reliable, servicable, fun to ride? What would you ride if savage would not exist today?

There's heavier, there's lighter

Yamaha SR500
Honda XBR500
RE Continental GT (we will see how it goes, reliability-wise)
Yamaha Virago?
That horrible Honda FT500 thing? (I would not ride it)

My 2c, YMMVetc

or perhaps the Indian version of the Enfield?

How many archaic designs are still on the road beside the enfield and the Savage?? :o

Modern would include Rotax motored BMW.  The SRX and Honda Ascot were shorter lived attempts at the simple road single of 500-650-cc.

I actually have been thinking lighter and smaller... the 300 ninja is an awesome little machine but the seating position isn't great for longer rides. I did ride it from home (north coast of fl.) to north Carolina, tennesse, Georgia and Kentucky (put about 2,500mi on it) when I was healthy.
But now that i'm not in as good shape and thinking about the future, I have been looking around at other bikes and when I purchased the savage for my wife found it to be very close to what I think will be my "final" bike.
My final bike will probably be more of a bark o' lounger than a bobber or chopper... low fat wide cushy seat, with a tall semi-wide one seat sissy bar to lean back against... taller bars that reach back to the semi-reclined position I will be in... and of course all the wizzes and bangs I can attach.... heated everything.... ufo blinding front lighting system (for seeing in the dark of course)... quick attach detach system for luggage and traveling (that I will probably only do once a year), and honey-do shopping trips.... OH.. and a horn that will wake the hounds of hell if they are sleeping in the road ahead... :o
So, if I can manage to chop a savage down to a useable weight and size that a 89 year old granny can pick up without throwing a disc in her back.... I might actually go for one... if not... I will buy cheap and experiment with smaller bikes... like the ccw bobber... brand new they are only $3,200 and I suppose used they will rival a 2004 and older savage in price range of $1000 to $1800. :)

If the Savage didn't exist, I doubt I'd have a bike newer than the mid 1960s.

I'd likely still be riding HD or Indian Big Twins. 74 or 80 cubic inch flathead/side valve engines preferred. 74 or 80 inch OHV engines tolerated.

Or a pre-unit British parallel twin.

Actually trying to decide right now whether to finish the Savage or call Lancer to come get it as a parts roach and wash my hands of it. I've had the thing for 16 years, since it was brand new, and it still isn't "right". NEEDS a springer fork.

I like the Heist but 250cc, but that tiny cylinder looks lonely, wish they made a bigger top.

Someone once asked me if I cut a cylinder off a 883 Sportster to make my baby Savage.

Not similar but comprable.. Honda 750

I had a 1971 Honda 350 twin that was the same weight and power level as the Savage ... Handled about the same too (except for mid-pegs).

That bike felt like an extention of my body kinda like the savage does . :)

The local " Scooter Store" near me (which does consignment sales and will sell my Harley for me) is supposed to get in a couple Enfield bikes in the next couple of months. He is kinda branching out and selling the small "odd ball" bikes and scooters. He is right on the major road and the local county did a counter test and about 34,000 vehicles a day pass in front of his shop on the four lane road, so I will get the Harley sold and if he gets the Enfield bikes in I will take a look at them too.

I prefer side valve engines to OHV engines, and definitely prefer side valve to OHC engines...

But I'd ride this. Um, there IS a Panhead in the pic, you pervs...  ;)  ;D

Depending on how I ride mileage varies between 17-20 km/L. Engine is great scince I removed the air injection and fitted a K&N with pipes and put a Dyno jet kit in the carbs. Will pull top from as low as 1500 rpm. Likes to rev put mileage suffers big time then. Did 1500 k's on it over the weekend riding with a mate on his Victory. He couldn't keep with me in the twistys, was only when we had long straights would he catch and pass me.

17-20 km/L is 40-47 mpg

Just reading the specs.. it would be a Savage killer. I suspect that "in person" maybe not so much.

As long as they keep making the S40 and or parts, that's all I need.  I've had mine for 8 years and still really enjoy it.   :)

That place in Mobile still has a brand new 2012 for $3,600.  Hall's Motorsports, no sales tax if possession is taken out of AL.

Picked up my new Continental GT today. First impressions are of an old engine in a new chassis, which is pretty much what it is. Vibrates much more than the Savage and power delivery is pretty soft. Both are fine with me. The fuel injection mapping is pathetic and hopefully someone comes up with a better map that can be flashed in SOON. Brakes, outstanding, suspension, lovely, very comfortable ride position and seat, and looks sensational.
I'm thinking I will like this one.
