Title: Shocks shocks
Post by procrastinator on 02/05/14 at 22:17:06

I know this topic probably has been gone over a million times but....
I have a 2001 ls650 bobber and I need to know is what shocks I can replace the stock shocks with. I'm a big guy probably to big for such a small bike but it's such a fun bike to ride. I would like something heavy duty and fairly stiff. the streets here are really bumpy and I bottom out a lot. any idea's please let me know.

And you can also use the search function to find the 20 other times shocks have been discussed.

I found a pair of 412's off a 95 Kawasaki vn 1500. the part number is
412-4218 can anyone tell me if these will fit my 01 ls650. do all 412's fit or are there certain part numbers to look for??  because price varies greatly.

It appears that the 4218 shocks are 13".  That is a bit tall for the bike unless you are doing a Cafe' Racer.  One other thing to pay attention to is the standard or Heavy Duty spring rating.  The Heavy Duty might be a bit stiff for the Savage....when you read the Progressive webpage they state the Heavy Duty springs are for Double Up riding, and probably they are talking about double up riding on 600+ pound bikes.

When you are buying used shocks you need to find out the shock length and the spring rate.....not everyone lists that.

The stock shocks are 10.5".  Something 11" to 12" is best for the stock cruiser look.  Taller than 12" and the back fender is way up in the air.

Thanks Dave, the guy who has the 4218 has them posted at 11.5" that's why I was looking at them plus he only wants $ 45.00 for them. And being a bigger guy I'm looking for the heavier springs. that's why I asked if all 412 series shocks fit or are there certain numbers to look for.  I would like to have a pair of 418's but progressive has discontinued them. And I can't find anyone who's selling.  ( cheap )

you can down load the catalog from progressive.

I'm 240 and the 412-1005? standard sportster shock are ok for me solo at the max setting, maybe a shade soft.  At least they are for the super x I do in the morning (I134w to I5n)
