Title: 96 LS650 performance/carb issues
Post by Gayle on 02/04/14 at 10:42:29

I have a 96 LS650.  New to ownership of a motorcycle last summer.  Am trying to learn basic mechanical maintenance on it. :o

The bike was starting to backfire, then started having driveability issues.  It would stall and would be difficult to start, RPMs ran very low after it would stall.  If I tightened the idle screw, it would start and stay running, but at a very high idle.  I did not notice if it was dumping fuel after shut off at this time, though a few times it smelled flooded.

Purchased a carb seal kit and replacement air cleaner since it was full of fuel.  Cleaned and resealed the carb and reinstalled.  It ran ok for a short bit then at the end of the season started experiencing the same driveability issues.  Backfiring, stalling.  Though to a lesser degree.  And... I also noticed it was dumping fuel after shutting off.  My husband says the float is likely sticking.

What do I need to do to get this fixed?  Am assuming it is still a carb problem, but may have to get a little more involved than just cleaning and reassembling.  And buying another air cleaner to replace the fuel contaminated one.

Am definitely open to suggestions!  Not quite ready to spend the $$ for a new carb.  But am reluctant to pay someone else to install or repair if this is something I can do.

OK, WILL SEE ABOUT WHAT TO DO TO TEST IT.

THANKS.

If the petcock fails the Serowbot test, go to the tech section and read TXSIZZLER'S post about replacing it with the correct Yamaha Raptor part number 5LP-24500-00. The post is second down under important topics, on page 1 of the tech section.

Hah!  Thanks!

Neon lights & sirens might have helped to make it more noticeable
* sheesh* >@myself, not you.  ::)

Figured off season would be a good time to start working on this.  Am optimistic the groundhog was wrong, am seeing a lot of bird action.

Maybe I should clarify "dumping fuel" to make sure we're talking apples & apples.

The fuel is flooding and draining from the air cleaner box.  Is this still petcock related?

It could be.  If the diaphragm in the petcock is faulty, it can drain fuel through the vacuum hose, and the fuel enters the carb throat and drains into the airbox....and the fuel can also go into the inlet manifold at the cylinder.  If the fuel gets past the valves, it can contaminate the oil with fuel.  So check your oil level and if it has risen....there is most likely fuel in the oil.

Glad I asked.  Thanks.

Best to check the oil when hot with the bike as upright as possible. Don't let it lean on the stand.

Not always possible, and a little extra oil in most cases is fine.
Once you check your oil level in the vertical position, put it on the kickstand and check it again.  Now is it at the bottom of the window?
Since it's more convenient, most of the list members do it this way.

I put a brick under my kickstand, it's not quite vertical but close enough.
