Anybody seen one of these lately? Back in the 80's Suzuki made a 400cc Single for the Asian market...named the "Tempter"...sadly we never got to see this in the U.S. How about a 650 single like this? (Think RYCA...but less expensive)...Perhaps with a front disc brake.

I wish I was so good at photoshop to "Savagize" that photo.

Anyway, if you look at it carefully, you will notice:

- the toolbox+airbox covers are replaced by a single, better looking side cover;

- comes with chain drive as standard ;)

- drum brake appears to "be the business", unlike the moped-sized disc on the LS650 :P

- decent capacity tank

- decent instrument cluster with tachometer AND A TRIP METER ! :D

LOVE that green cafe racer! Think one of our 650 Savage engines with a forged 10.5 to 1 piston, stage II camshaft and one of my Mikuni TM-36 flat slide carb kits. :)

The green one, looks like the side cover is a nicely modified Ducati 900 SS part. The seat unit looks nasty kicked up like it is, would look much better with a straight line through the tank base to seat. The front brake looks HOT. Love it. Fairing: Dunstall maybe?

The Asian spec Tempter was a Thumper ... Suzuki also sold a parallel twin in the U.S. called the Tempter ... love that black "Bratstyle" Tempter BTW!!

Back in the late 60's, my best friends older brother was in Vietnam, and he bought a Honda motorcycle and shipped it back to the US in boxes.

Anybody want to buy me a Temptor and ship it to the US for me? I wonder where the closest market is to get one. I have a brother in law living in China......wonder if he would track one down and bring it home with him.

Still think the 400 Tempter head cover trim should have been used instead of the chrome slabs on our Savages...

Here in Canada, any vehicle from Japan older than 15 yrs can be imported legally and without duty charges ... there has been a growing market here for those RHD, 4-WD & 2-WD 3-cyl. mini-trucks & vans from over there ... several import companies are bringing in used units (Japanoid.com is one that comes to mind) and I'm seeing a few on the roads even in my neck of the woods ... same companies could likely easily source and import an older 'zuki Tempter from Japan I'd say ... prolly similar import vehicle companies in the U.S.?

In east Russia used Japanese cars are so widespread that people joke, that they should switch to left-hand traffic. I never thought such cars can interest people in North America. Are they legal here?

There area some companies that are selling the small import trucks for "Off Highway" use. Since they don't meet crash or emission standards they can never be titled or licensed for highway use. I have seen some at Universities being used as service vehicles around the campus.....and I am sure that small towns could use them locally as their Police Departments are not going to ticket their own people. Kind of a shame we can't get them for use as the local grocery getters.

They turn up in the UK every so often. I know an old guy in Sussex that has one that he purchased when he decided his Trumpet Hurricane was to much for him. A London outfit imports Jap stuff and one was on EBay just before Christmas.

BTW, there 's a young gal who drives a 1997 Japanese spec Dihatsu Hi-Jet mini-truck who parks in the parking garage of the office bldg where I work ... 660cc, 3-cyl, 4WD, RHD ... she picked it up in Vancouver last year and drove it all the way across Canada ... 7800kms without a single issue (other than that is was slow climbing some of the passes in the Rockies she said LOL!) ... some of that stuff is well built!

I've had 2 of those, (GN 400s) good bikes, exept the 6 volt electrics and kick only
the kick only wasn't realy a prob with the compression release, but my 2nd one kept getting junk in the carb
being able to pull the float bowl and pull the jet and blow it out by the roadside was pretty cool though
I hear you can do that on the S40 too

No..the single cylinder Tempter was never imported to the US. The US got a Suzuki called the Tempter...but it was a 650cc twin.

I know of a importer in LA area who would find one ship it here, but you would spend far to much time & cash. Dealing with customs $ , shipping in a container from who knows where to a port near you(LA)$$$ , bike & finders fee $$$$, then getting it registered $$ , that a lot of $$$$$$$$ , so

I read something a while back that was saying you could import any vehicle 25 years or older without meeting any pollution or safety standards. I am not sure how true it was, didn't research it at all. Can't afford the shipping.

I blew up the picture, and can't see a speedo drive on the engine. It most likley runs off the front wheel like most bikes. The side view of the front brake shows another cable coming off the other side of the front wheel. If you want a dash mounted speedo, your best bet is a 6 spoke front wheel from a early to mid 80's Suzuki 450 with the drive, cable, and speedo complete. Not a simple swap, but doable.

Look at that purrfect rake angle of the forks , I wish I would have deraked my RYCA tracker. I see nothing wrong with that bike , it just needs my engine in it , very classic British lines and I love the drum front brake. Wonder if it has that same horrible exhaust port ?

I think someone here has done it. You need a longer cable, and a speedo with the same gearing as ours. And you still have the problem of it being off if, or when you change the size of your rear tire, and or pulley sizes. If you really want a accurate handlebar mounted unit, go with a GPS. And when you make the mount, put LEDs up on the top corners so you don't have to look down to see your turn signals were on for the last 10 miles!
Of course that never happened to me!!!

My PC800 has auto cancel also, it's a 96'. I think 97' and 98' they dropped it and the "robo cop" front fender as a cost cutting thing.

Just a thought: All the OEMs not named Honda will be scrambling to produce an answer to the new Rebel 500. Suzuki should offer a modern version of the Savage, with EFI, better looking tank, cast wheels, etc. Would be cheap since tooling has been paid off a long time ago. Price it a dollar below the Rebel.
