Title: NVIDIA and STEAM both begin FOSS cooperation

http://liliputing.com/2014/02/nvidia-offers-initial-open-source-support-for-k1-graphics.html

Steam (Valve) has always been pro open source.   They have marched all the way up the mountain to the Debian people they need to work with and opened a real discourse about gaming standards on Linux.

Being well liked, Steam is going to be received well by the Debian folks as long as they suggest and cooperate and expand on what the group tries to do rather than try to run off with their own plans.

DRM will actually not be a show stopper as it would have been 6 months ago since Linus and the kernel guys are going to put it into the kernel soon anyway.

So, now NVIDIA ....

NVIDIA has not just given over a binary blob for their new super chip, instead they are trying to cooperate with the FOSS driver group, giving them most all of what they have been asking for.

NVIDIA is not well liked, having been a "stone wall" and very arrogant for many years previously.

NVIDIA realizes though that the world has changed and they MUST change with it.

Intel realizes that the world has changed and they MUST change with it.

Microsoft, not so much.   Still headless and thrashing in the snow.

;)

Why is the NVIDIA K-1 important, should it be fully FOSS supported?

It is the very first ARM 64 bit chipset with the grunt to run a laptop or a desktop very handily and very well should there be a general purpose ARM OS suitable to do that job.

NVIDIA could step up into the Intel/AMD/Apple ranks with this one, if they can get it COMPLETELY supported by FOSS & Linux distros.

NVIDIA needs to make nice with the FOSS driver group, work hard to get the FOSS driver working completely and then they need to see if Mark Shuttleworth will add complete ongoing support for their K1 into Ubuntu.

NVIDIA also needs to get the price of the chipset down out of the clouds as that is what killed their last primo chipset, the Tegra 4.

PS  NVIDIA is also setting the pattern for the old school boys to follow to get into FOSS and Linux.

That reminded me of an old story:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/alexknapp/2012/11/13/cray-claims-the-fastest-supercomputing-crown-with-the-nvidia-powered-titan/

The basic architecture of Titan is a CPU-GPU hybrid. The system contains 18,688 nodes, with each node containing an AMD 16-core Opteron and a NVIDIA Tesla K20X GPU accelerator.

No intel required.  I am hoping that nVidia might be liking this kind of story. For us old dino types that like a very fast desktop. This could be very fun indeed.

PS: there is a game on Steam I am VERY looking forward to called Banished, which is an "indy" developed game. The dev is working with Steam and states that ports to Mac and Linux are the next order of the day. The Linux port being "helped" by Steam as they encourage devs to create SteamOS games ( Debian Liunx).
