Title: Dear Geeks
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 01/31/14 at 08:06:35

Im having some real "slowdown" issues. I opened task manager & closed tabs. CPU use went from over 50% to next to nothing, opened Firefox again, CPU use spiked, dropped back to 4%, working fast.. in 10 minutes, CPU use is back up to over 50 %, I have 3 tabs open, Suzukisavage, Illuminattiguzzisti & Infowars, back to slow & setting the cursor with a mouseclick to autoscroll makes it herky jerky,,

Should I uninstall Firefox & reinstall? Ive got a bug somewhere,, how do I find it & stomp it?

Download malwarebytes and let it do a scan...(follow their instructions, they may want you to scan in safe mode)...
malwarebytes has a free version...

I'll second that.  Since it seems to be firefox doing it, are there several video ads playing in one of the screens?  A few video ads can create some slowdown. I've had this problem before especially if several of them are flash or even some flash based websites have caused slowdowns.

Definitely determine if you have a malware problem. That can be some bad stuff.

We are assuming you have funcioning anti-virus? If not, you can download a pretty decent free antivirus from http://free.avg.com.

I havent run anti-malware in a bit ( work does it for me at work) havent been using the home PC much.
But I do third the anti-malware

Another test would be to hit both suzukisavage and guzzi websites but not infowars.. and see what happends over time. i susupect that the infowars page is running some "scripts" which uses your PC's CPU to power. If the problem goes away you know its them. If it does not go away then yeah... most likely a trojan on your system.

Killed Infowars, went from 54% cpu TO 53% sTILL SLOW AS CRAP..
I cant run the program, since I cant find it.. Im using XP, so, anyone who can tell me how to make this work, Im ready,, If nothing else, Ill delete firefox & reload it,, cuz when I close that, CPU use goes to almost nuthin,,

Firefox screen has a down arrow icon, in the upper right area of the screen, next to the "home" icon.
That is where the downloads are.  Click, you should see the dowloads.  Right click on a file and you can open the "containing folder"
OR
C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxxx\My Documents\Downloads

At least that is where mine go.

Thanks guys for the help,, Ive built a few puters, motherboard, power supply, disk drives & all installed & formatted & installed the OS & they worked, but this stuff isnt what I know,, & I never wanna build another one, either,,

Put a shortcut to m-bytes on you desktop... then shut sown...
boot back up holding down the F8 key and you should go to safe mode...
Try running it from there... (I think that will bypass your AVG and firewall)l...

Anybody.. feel free to tell me I'm wrong... I ain't that computer clever either...
:-?...

Past 1 1/2 yeras, I'm using Microsoft Essentials... (it's free, works good, and is rarely any bother...

Plus 1 on MS Essentials.  I used AVG for years up until about 2 years ago as AVG as become too bloated and too obtrusive.

Going into safe mode will still give you a desk top similar to what you would see in normal mode and if you created a shortcut on your desk top to m-bytes as Versy says you'll see it in safe mode.  And you'll be able to restart while in safe mode the same way you would in normal mode as well.

Safe mode runs minimal programs... but if you visit sites with malware, even in safe mode it will dog out your cpu. "Safe mode" does not protect anything.

I've always used windows stuff on my windows computer, stopped using essentials as it kept locking up for some reason, so I switched to windows defender (old program still supported and in use).

McAfee and Norton are memory hogs and I would not promote them if you have minimum ram (4 meg or lower) or an older system (5yrs or older).

A lot of "questionable" sites use keyclick advertisements which slap searching cookies on your web browser (kinda like the adds you see at the top of this site) that track your past url's to put up adds that might interest you, and those trackers eat up cpu usage.

One big clue if you visit a questionable site is "pop up" adds, or adds with video or gif clips, and also those with multiple adverts down the side of the screen. The site OP might not even realize the adds have malware... they just like the few pennies they get for putting the ad on the page.

Title: Re: Dear Geeks
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 02/01/14 at 21:10:23

& NOW all I have open is this tab & task manager & the CPU is scorchin along at 53% use,.. Ima reboot,, & see how long it takes for the bug to start playin.. I think somethin is sending, cuz the "Packets sent" when I go look at internet connection is over 40,000.. thats not right,, well,, I dont Think it is.. would someone look at theirs? Sposed to have 54 MBPS, but I think thats system capacity, not Mine, but shared by a lot of folks..I dunno, of course..

You may want to consider to switch to linux unless you really need to use some windows only software. All my home computers are on ubuntu since 2008. Everybody is happy :).

You can also run mini Linux programs and do a "dual boot".

If you want to keep your windows, when you load up the Linux program tell it to create a "dual boot"

When you log on there will be a screen with four options two for windows and two for your new Linux
arrow down to boot to Linux normally and there ya go..
you will probably have to create a log on name and password, just don't forget it... I keep having to hit and miss mine....

I am still playing with my windows 8 on this new laptop but log onto the small laptop every other day to play with it a bit... still learning

Every modern linux installer allows to preserve existing windows installation, so yes, dual boot is definitely something to consider. Ubuntu can be configured to log into certain user account automatically without entering password. Not very secure, but convenient for people without much computer background. My mom's computer is configured in such way. You still need to remember password to do administering that would require superuser (root) access.
