AMD is showing and sampling the first of their ARM based server chipsets along with a testing board.

Lithography is somewhat fat --- current state of the ARM art is 20nm and Intel's state of the art is 22nm soon to drop even lower.   AMD isn't even using their own best lithography process, because they don't have to.

The magic of ARM chipsets is that operating somewhat "fat" at 28nm the chipset still outperforms several of AMD's current old style server chipsets at a very significant 40% reduction in power usage compared to those same existing server chipsets.

Full production may be at a tighter lithography level, but the samples were run at 28nm so as to get 'her done in a timely fashion.

Intel, as a full ARM licensee can of course meet or beat these sorts of numbers, but to date has not chosen to do so.

This will change when folks begin ordering the more efficient server chipsets from AMD.

=====================

Those who know motherboards realize this board could be configured for PC use very easily.   And it isn't like AMD doesn't have ATI graphics available to put on one of such .....

However, that would canibalize AMD's existing PC chips and boards business, and the time to do that has not yet arrived.

THERE IS NO COMMONLY ACCEPTED BROAD RANGE ARM OS YET OUT THERE ON THE TABLE TO DRIVE SUCH AN ACTION.

Plus, AMD bluntly states that the PC market is in decline and all their resources will be aimed at gaming and the server farm markets going out into the future.

Long time AMD fan here.... though I do wonder how they will fair in a future PC-less world.

AMD still has a good following with AMD CPUs as the poor-mans Chip, but the race is long over and Intel has a slew of chips that slaughter any "gaming" chip AMD can make.

AMD has a pretty good following with the Old ATI now AMD graphics cards. Nvidia bought Physx and and been giving away dev support for it. A number one game being PlanetSide2, which I did play. However, nVidia screwed that pretty bad in terms of performance for anything short of the best chips from both Intel and Nvidia.

AMD grphic cards were and are the only game in town for coin mining, though BTC mining is now off of GPUs and only on ASCIS. LTC is still GPU and AMD OWNS that market. Dont laugh, think of one PC with 6 $400 cards  time many many miners... thats som real dough. And mining can be tough on cards, and miners have to keep upgrading to keep up with ever higher difficulty rates. AMD has made some nice money from the cryto-currency market.

Before I got out fo the LAN management game.. I did get to build one server with AMD opterons. It was a HP. Nice pizza-box server.
