Title: Failure to start, and an oil leak when running.
Post by centex91 on 01/27/14 at 12:28:30

Hey again y'all!

I just finished installing my new raptor 660 petcock for my '95 savage but I'm still having some issues unfortunately. Whenever I try to turn the bike on, the engine attempts to turn over but eventually just quits. Subsequent attempts at using the electric start just results in a rapid clicking noise, but the bike does come to life if I bump start it in second gear. When I get her running, oil begins to leak at the bottom of the cylinder (pictured below) - pretty sure that's not a good sign.

The tank is 3/4 full of new gas, I've checked the oil level (just below the full line), and I made sure to cap of the vacuum line on the carb when I did the raptor install. Any advice/tips would be much appreciated, as I am all out of ideas.

Your battery dead, charge and or replace.

yep, not a good sign.  and it's an unusual place for a leak.
have you had the clutch cover off recently?
there's an oil duct along the case and cover joint that can leak if the gasket gone bad.  There's also an oil duct running up along the rear cylinder bolt.  and another possibility is the oil fill cap, replace the o-ring.

+1 to everything Versy said...
I'd check for an oil gasket under that oil filler cap first..(always check the easiest first)...
If that ain't it,.. clean everything real good, and then watch closely...

A weak battery can turn the engine over a little bit, but not enough to fire...
If it's more than 1 1/2 to 2 years old,... get a new one... (sealed batteries are worth the extra cost)...

Let us know how it's going after that... ;)...

I hadn't messed with the clutch cover at all, but I'll definitely check my gaskets and o-rings on my oil system.

Any recommendations on batteries? I'll be honest, I haven't read up on that part of the bike at all  :o

Thanks again for y'all's quick replies; this forum is just another upside to owning a savage.
