Title: Chassis Number Post by bmwnunkie on 01/23/14 at 09:21:14 Hiya folks... very new to this. My parts supplier is asking me for my bikes chassis number. Where would I look for this? I have a 1997, LS650 Savage and loads of numbers in different places but I can't seem to find the chassis number? Any clues ? |

Title: Re: Chassis Number Post by bmwnunkie on 01/26/14 at 05:59:14 Thanks All... Turns out the chap wanted the VIN number.... I managed to get an oil filter, oil and a plug. FYI I have bought a non runner 1997 LS 650 Savage ( UK ). No idea what is wrong with it. The previous owner said it hadn't run for three years, so I am reluctant to get it running without giving it a small service and trying to give it the 'once over'. I will have to get an air filter also but I forgot about that. Any tips, incidentally, on doing the old bird up ? |

Did he say under what circumstances it stopped running? Like, with a loud clanking in the engine or just got up one morning and it wouldn't start? |
Title: Re: Chassis Number Post by bmwnunkie on 01/26/14 at 07:29:08 No.. he didn't say why... my guess is the clanking thing... or complete seizure. To be honest I quite expect it to be one or the other. But you never know |
Title: Re: Chassis Number Post by justin_o_guy2 on 01/26/14 at 10:10:01 Id dump the oil into a clean, aluminum pan & run a magnet thru it & see what kinda stuff shows up. Id "autopsy" the oil filter & look around, wiping with a clean white cloth, like T-shirt material, inside where the filter sits. Look for bits of metal.,.chunks bigger than a fine powder are not a good sign, Do that before you invest in those materials,, dont open anything, You mite decide against even putting the oil in,, As for needing a VIN, naaah,, these things didnt change that much, an oil filter for a 650 savage is the same, first one made to now. Air filters, too. There were changes in the starter gears & electrics & transmission went from 4 to 5 gears & EPA regs made the jetting change down thru the years, but otherwise, the guts & parts stayed the same, brakes & rotors & everything except the length of cables & hoses, due to handlebars made differently. |
Title: Re: Chassis Number Post by bmwnunkie on 01/26/14 at 11:34:32 Yes... that's what I will do... thanks for that.. DO you have an opinion as to what kind of jack or stand I should get in order to stand the 650 upright while I work on her ? There seems to be quite a number. You may have gathered that I am a bit of a novice at this Regards |

Title: Re: Chassis Number Post by justin_o_guy2 on 01/26/14 at 16:23:27 Drain the oil on the kick stand. Itll drain better. Lay on the other side, put the wrench on the plug aimed to the front, drive down on the wrench. |

Yeah, don't spend the money on a motorcycle lift. If you REALLY want one, wait until you are sure you are going to keep the bike and plan on doing a LOT of work. There's cheaper ways to lift the bike. |
