Title: Speedometer Rattle Fix
Post by pgambr on 01/19/14 at 19:39:46

I'm going to try to fix the rattle in my speedometer.  I got new springs, gasket/cushion, and some 2-sided self bonding tape.  I read a thread where someone used some rubber grommets so the springs wouldn't be up against the metal tabs on the bottom of the tank.  Does that sound sound like a good plan?  Again, any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

Sure... anything that insulates those springs from the screws and mounts...
I usually just squirt gobs of RTV at them... ;D...

Isn't it amazing what an awful racket they can make?...

All I did was fashion a gasket from some of that gray, 1/8th inch thick, adhesive on one side foam rubber/tape. I had just bought a window unit air conditioner & that stuff was in the "Installation packet".. It goes between the speedo body & tank. Careful trimming & its not even visible.

Tech section page 4 about 9th post from the bottom, might be more complex than JOG2's post.

Doing a tidy job of what I did was tedious but straight forward.

When I fixed the wife's speedo, I just replaced the springs with a thick fuel line.
Guess I should have taken pictures, did it about a year and a half ago, still no rattles.

Old Rider, that's the tech section principle.

Thanks for the insight, I'll read those posts after work.  If it is halfway decent weather tomorrow I plan to start talking it apart.  My work space is my car port.   :D

If simply replacing the springs with rubber tubing wins it, thats a LOT easier than what I did,,Thats a Minutes job,, mine was well over an hour of measuring, cutting, positioning,, PITA,, dude,, do the hose thing,,

I picked up some hose.  Incidentally, what is PITA?

If you do go the rubber hose way, the tech post has good info on the length you need, apparently there are some fragile studs when you pull the rubber hose down.

This is the 3rd or 4th time I have seen the "rapture" petcock posted on this forum in the last week.  Now I realize the Raptor petcock is somewhat heavenly for solving those pesky vacuum petcock issues.........but just when did the Raptor petcock become "devine"?
