Title: New Elio unveiling
Post by Ragnar444 on 01/19/14 at 12:56:36

Here is a nice shot of the new 3-wheeled Elio being presented at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. So much fun following it's development.  :P

Is it just me or did they swipe a few style lines from a Mustang?

Like riding around on something like this would be a bad thing.
Fugit about it.
Also, wasn't the Mustang modeled after a WWII fighter?  :-?

Well, for $6,800.00 and 84mpg, i'll be driving one. There are different colors... I'll get the white one, cooler down south.
I'm still not sure about the headlights tho...they still look too sunkin' below the front fender, how they gonna put light out to the ground in front?

A lot of former automotive engineers from Detroit are behind the design, they've thought of everything. That is what makes it so cool in my mind. Would love to see the American auto/motorcycle industry rise again :D

Its definitely going to be licensed as a "motorcycle" like the canam and they are working to get the helmet law changed for covered 3 wheelers.
But we might have to wear helmets in some states still, even tho it has a roll cage and covered, I won't mind.
I'm selling the Harley, the Honda is sold, I will be buying a savage and fixing it up to ride, then sell my ninja, and with the cash left over from all the sales I should have enough to buy the Elio.
We shall see.... Its a plan, but i'm not sure if I want to put a downpayment on one and might wait for them to come available for the public to purchase.
But a guarantee money back downpay I believe you have to go $1000 or higher, so if the company folds you still get your money back. If you do the "all in" I don't think you get it back on company fold, but if they do produce you get it taken off the price of the vehicle.

I did the 'all in' nonrefundable $1000 deal. For some reason, even if it fails, I am having so much fun following it, it will be money well spent. This type of thing fascinates me like nothing else. So I have to eat ramen for a few months if they fold!  ;D

I tell you what...
That's a Suzuki motor...
Same one as in my Metro...  I've owned 2 of them...
They are great little motors...
Sounds like they are using the same tranny and drivetrain too...
That is great combo... (the tranny shifts like butter)...
Rock solid reliable... easy to work on... (this may be the last car engine made that you can actually see the spark plugs)...
There are Metro's out there with 400k+ miles... with routine maintenance...

I don't even think about gas mileage or prices anymore...
I get 40+mpg no matter what...
If you can't afford an Elio... just find a used Metro for $1500 or so...
In 12 years,.. I've had 1 breakdown... (the airbox nut came loose, and bug got in and plugged the throttle body)...(that cost me a $80 tow, 3 days scratchin' my head, and $20 for my for my mechanic friend to fix in 5 minutes... I gave him $40 'cause I was embarrassed at not figuring it out myself)...
;D ;D ;D...

I'll stick with my Metro... seats 4... and I can haul 2x4"x8's inside...
It's a bit disappointing they didn't come up with some revolutionary engine...but,..
Why fix it, if it ain't broke?...
This engine's been around since the late 80's...
Time tested,.. just like our Savage...

...(the car I had before this... was a 69' Mustang 302, with modded Cleveland heads, and a 4 barrel with Edelbrock intake,  and custom exhaust...  I spent my weekends keeping it running)...
I don't even check my oil anymore... My Metro never uses any...

7600 already reserved
no helmet required in most states
$6800 for 3 wheels
take that canam

They are currently using the geo metro engine in their display models, but are working on a 3 cylinder model that according to the engineers will get the supposed 84mpg.
A lot of times the promised gas mileage and pricing change after the approval for technology ends up costing more than the theorized product.
That is why I haven't thrown my money into the pot, the Aptera vehicle taught me that. It was a good idea and would have worked, but he could not convince the rule makers that his idea would work.
Lets hope that Elio works, if the planned engine does not work, then the gas mileage will go from 45mpg city, 84mpg highway to 35mpg city and 55mpg highway, which will put it in the same range as the prius at 1/5th the price, using the geo metro engine.

I need one of these to carry two people .   Side by side would be nice but two for sure.
So "Does it have a back seat ?    :-?

This seem like (just the thing) for  America  at (Just the right time) too.

I'm keeping my truck for back-up.  :D  /   but will be glad to see these rides on the road !  :)

buried in the specs...

Quote:
The trunk space will be at least 27[ch8243] x 14[ch8243] x 10[ch8243], enough for an airline carry-on bag or a golf bag with the rear seat down (47[ch8243]+). If you’re the working type, tools, blueprints, briefcases, and who knows what else can also be accommodated

Quote:
Interior measurements are as follows:

Headroom: Driver 39.8 Passenger 36.4 in
Seat width: Driver 20.6 Passenger 25.3 in

Interior Shoulder Width: 26.8 in
Front seat Legroom: 42.7 in
Rear seat Legroom: 33.1 in

Elio has been designed to fit 95% of all men.

The tallest person we have had in the Elio is a 6’8[ch8243] former college basketball player, the largest is a 6’3[ch8243] 365 lb man, and the smallest is a 5’0[ch8243] woman (no, we didn’t ask the weight!).

They all fit and loved it! If you are outside of these sizes, you’ll just have to hop into an Elio yourself and see how it fits

I got 21 mpg in mine with the same setup (minus the Cleveland heads). Where'd you find an Edelbrock manifold to fit the Clevor setup?

Title: Re: New Elio unveiling

As far as I know the only intakes available for a Clevor come from Australia.  I don't think Edelbrock makes any.

I'll stop the thread hijack now!    ;D

I'm gonna suggest that you put some serious running/turn signals on the outrigger wheels.
One, to remind you that they're there.
And two, so that others know that they're there.
Lets face it, not many cars have exposed wheels, someone gonna either trip over them or run thru'm.

Yeah, some led's while parked would be a smart idea, or maybe for night time have some of this

I have reflective black on my rims of the 300 Ninja...but I only covered half the rim, so at slower speeds from the side it looks like the bike is wobbling back and forth....people tend to see that better.

Looks Neet, and at 84MPG, Really neet !
(If the production model will get that much)

Now, who will be the first to design a, "Cab",  for the, Can-Am ?

While on the XT-225 site. Their was a fellow in England,
who had a, 'Enclosed', 2 wheel, motorcycle.

A third party group has been given the first test drive of the Elio.  They seem to stress that the old Suzuki engine is pretty tired, and it definitely does sound noisy. It's a little quirky, but still a prototype.  I think this article provides a lot of good insight to anybody interested in Elio.

Not that I want to hijack the thread, but last friday p.m. my wife and I bought our new Toyota Auris Hybrid... Talk about revolutionary !

25 Km/liter = 58 mpg AND it's a CAR, 4 doors, seats 5... Oh... and check out the instrumentation !

OK, back to you folks  8-)

In the States that car is a member of the Prius family.  "Prius V" they call it.

I have some experience with Prii.  Good luck trying to get that 58 mpg.  You'll have to be doing 30mph or lower around town with slow acceleration.  It's not a bad car, but I've seen a couple of traditional gas engines that will rival the Prius' true mileage.

Post by mpescatori on 09/10/14 at 00:13:12

I understand that. However, here in Europe, the average city is at least 1000 years old, and the "city center" is actually a maze of narrow alleyways.

This is a pictore of Historic Williamsburg, Va. ; see how wide the street is... from the 1600's !

http://https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRY4hK_pD5kY2H1FasPF57PKYC3mLIgCGPI_sW9h8S7ZfeW2JqA0Q

There are pictures of the historic city centers of, respectively, London, Paris, Rome. Compare and picture yourselves stock in 2-way traffic...

http://https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSt0xcAf1LBRo0XPlnsv2owDO08YOAAfVU1oxK8jleib_v1XGo-http://https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRxfJu39JK2tVct_kVrEvMpYrhojT2dY-LN1-rSJr0F39ovqp97dQhttp://https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQJugB7Z6EtAkwuREWvaLnE3asNjl9grmoHy-h_bqFYkKbyG80M

So in historic city centers you WILL be doing 25mph... or less...

In the few days we've driven the car here and there, the Toyota has never fared less than 40mpg in the city center on a 1800cc gasoline engine.
Compared to her 1400cc VW Polo, that's VERY good.

Back to the Elio  8-)

Still, 84mpg and only $6,800.00, my wife and I have a $100 reservation. They won't start manufacturing until late 2015, so that means we will get ours about the start of, or middle of 2016...just around the time for her Hyundai to stop running (2004 elantra).

Talk about inflation...

So the Prius has a an 1800CC engine???

I recall my buddy having an OLD like 1970 Datsun with a 1000cc motor, and a 4 speed.  He bought this after giving up on his Old 88 with a Rocket 350 V8. So he shows up one night about 9pm.. ( this is about 1983) and he wants me to see the engine on this Datsun... it seems he was able to get it to idle ( happliy) ay about 500 rpm. It purred so quietly and without any vibration .. we were just in awe... who makes engines like that?  And remember the car was about 13 years old at that point. Of course it was a complete rust bucket within a few years.

PS: I know he got laid in that car.. which at that point in life was a major concern.  his next car was a Toyota Celica ST ( early 80's model).

Post by mpescatori on 09/16/14 at 00:45:52

Here in Europe, the Prius has a 1800cc engine faring about 98hp and demands 98RON gas; I have instructed ny wife to use strictly 98RON gas in the Toyota.

Early Piuses had a 1500cc engine which proved quite below expectations; that same engine is now fitted to the Toyota Yaris Hybrid (picture below)

http://https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRNNK_2oVBURYyp3477jrbberTrH0Gdj7GU2_DthOtUzdNCoiLw

Definitely a tiny car by US standards but it will sit 5 (tight) and you can park her anywhere... literally !

Anyway, last Sunday we drove to my sis-in-law's, and at a more or less steady 90Km/h (55mph) we averaged 3.8 liters/100 Km... that's 62mpg...  8-)
