Title: Installing a tachometer
Post by PAPiekarski on 01/10/14 at 18:25:17

Ive done my research and have not found a definite way of hooking it up, I have a 4 wire analog tachometer

These are the ways I've seen thru the search Which on is correct?

-One wire goes to the neg side of the coil
-two wires go to the pos side of the coil
-one wire gets ground.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-The green wire goes to the "Black with yellow stripe" wire on the ignition coil
-the orange wire is switched power.
-I wired my tach light into it also since we don't have a "run with lights off" option.
-Ground can go on one of the screws holding the Ign coil to the frame.

I also just received a raptor petcock but found some rubber tube in the box with the petcock, whats the little rubber tube for? Its like 3 inches long...

What does the rubber tube look like? If it is thin and clear it is most likely used to protect the stem during shipping. That is how mine was shipped.

Here is how I wired my tachometer (from RYCA).

Signal (Green) to "Black with Yellow Stripe" wire on the ignition coil
Ground (Black) to Ignition Coil frame screw
Power (Red) and Light (Blue) to Horn Hot Wire (It is ignition - switched)

Use a ring tongue terminal on the ground wire.
Don't wrap it under the screw head like I did.

I plugged the tachometer in the same way, but i installed connector between the ignition coil and a tachometer. it's easier to dismantle the fuel tank when I  repairing my babe-Savy.

What about the tach's that you only have to wrap a wire around the spark-plug wire? I put one of these on my DRZ and it works great, also functions as an hour meter.

I just lick a finger & touch the plug wire & count the eyelid flutters,, its not exact, but close enough to know if the idle is high enuff,

How do I put the green wire on the yellow one? just strip it and put the boot over it?

and what about the power? do I connect the power to the top wire on the horn?

Strip the end of the Green (Signal) wire, slip it into the spade connector of
the Yellow/Black coil wire, then push the spade connector back on to the coil.

Connect both the Red and Blue tachometer wires to the spade connector on
the Red & Black striped horn wire.
