Title: My winther project
Post by Michael L on 01/10/14 at 16:58:28

Hello peeps

Thought I would share my project I've got going on for the winther..
My plans for the bike is to make it into something like a "sporty chopper" -
with a slight lowering of the forks(think I'll be going with the 2 inches as the Ryca models), some kind of low bar, a modifyed seat that is lower and more narrow, new tyres, a tacho, etc.. And maybe some powerwrap.. I think the powerwrap thing is too hyped these days with all those bobber conversions, but we'll see if it would make for a nice look at the end..  8-)

This evening I got a new front tyre mounted, and balanced on the bike, yay saved that money  ;D

Here's some pictures of what I have collected so far :

Nope, not if you're going to upload them.

Check the tect section index for how-to's

I use:  www.tinypic.com for posting multiple pictures.  You download the photos to their site, then copy the address and post it in your thread.

This evening I got the rear tyre mounted and balanced.. That was a harsh one for sure, but I managed with a little help.. If you haven't already noticed, the tyres I've bought is someone called "full bore usa". They should be really good tyres and the price is only half of what metzeler marathon costs, and the pattern is actually quite similar.. The front is standard size, and the rear is 140/90-15..

And thanks Dave, i'll be posting pictures of the whole thing tomorrow.. Nighty night!

Some new pictures of the project.. Man the ideas are flying around  ;D
I wasn't going to use the fender on the pic, but I changed my mind, and now I think I've changed it again.. I think the perfect look for me would be to run it without a rear fender, but since side mounted license plates are ilegal, it's not an option.. So im thinking of getting a flat fender that sits alittle lower, and without sidewalls that covers the tyre. Got some new handlebars too. I like the width and pullback, but it feels to high so maybe im gonna get it lowered and tig welded.. What do you guys think?

Oh and got a little oil temp. gadget too  ;D

Where'd your "oil temp gadget" come from?  Me likey! Is there a tap already there for it or did you have to drill a hole?

you have to knock a hole into the engine casing with a big screwdriver and a sledgehammer - no just kiddin  ;D

the oil gauge is threaded, and replaces the oil filler cap  :)

Search ebay for "suzuki oil gauge" - here is a link to the site where I bought mine from - you can see on the list which models this one fits, so you can just buy one for one of those models, if you can't find one for the savage.. http://www.kickstartershop.de/en/OeLTHERMOMETER-diverse-SUZUKI

I must be having "one of those days"! I didn't even realize that was the oil fill cap hole!  Thanks for the link.

How long is the probe on the oil temp gauge? Does it conflict with the baffle that keeps oil from flying out if the fill plug is removed while the engine is running?

it's aprox. 1 cm, but my savage doesn't have such a baffle..?
I guess you could just remove it, if it did interfer?

I remember having my engine runing right after an oil change, without the plug. It did spit some air, but no oil..

I don't think my '07 has that baffle - ask me how I know

Ebay link for those of us in 'Merica.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oil-Thermometer-Suzuki-Gsf-600-650-1200-1250-Bandit-s-/380869306879?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item58ad9469ff&vxp=mtr

Read the description it has the Savage in the compatible list.

Side note - is this the best place to measure your oil temp?

Well no it is not the best place.....but it is the easiest.  I betcha it is impossible to read this gauage while you are riding.  It most likely isn't reading oil temperature as much as it is reading the case temperature.

Best place to measure the oil temp is by removing the front plug down by the footpeg, install an adapter and a temperature sending unit, then place a readable gauge up on the handlebars.

I have a Trail Tech Vapor speedometer and you can install either an oil or head temperature sending unit, and read the temperature on the dash....and even set a yellow and red warning light to make you aware when you have reached the set points.

They also have smaller units for temperature readout.  The only problem I have with these smaller units is they have an internal battery that is not replaceable and only lasts 5 years.

Good to know. Definitely not readable while driving. I guess I was asking about the accuracy of what it shows...so if it shows an oil temp that is normal at the case...does that mean all is well elsewhere? I can see the benefit of this for someone sitting in traffic and wanting to make sure things aren't getting too hot. Or for some general R&D stuff.

Sorry to hijack the thread...I know there have been a plethora of oil threads so no need to add to it...just wondering of the efficacy of measuring oil temp at this location.

Thanks!

Me.....I have a head temperature sensor.  That is where the high temperatures are going to show up first.  It gets the hottest at sustained 70mph speeds, sometimes in traffic....and the highest temp I ever saw was on a first gear gravel mountain road in 90+ degree weather.  All of the temps however were well within what the bike can handle.  This year I have different gearing....so it will be interesting to see how the temp at 70 mph is changed.

Now.....back to the regularly scheduled Winther Project.
