Title: Sputter, Die and Backfire
Post by Crich422 on 01/09/14 at 10:58:07

Hello everybody, it's a warm(er) day in Colorado so I decided to go out and take a loop around my apartment complex. Just to keep from letting her sit for months without firing her up. It was a bit rough to start, but i expected that since it has been about a month. I used some starter fluid but after letting it idle and warm up it idled with only a few little sputters here and there. It stopped after it warmed up. I threw on my boots and took it down the street and back to my garage, as I was on my way back, I gave it some throttle and it started to sputter and died. Then it backfired after it died, it hasn't done that before. It sputtered most when I shifted into second gear and let out the clutch, but when I pulled the clutch in, the RPMs would go up a little bit but not enough to keep it running.

Something else that was a bit weird, when I turned my petcock to ON the carb started dripping fuel out of the fuel runoff vents (there should be a hose connected to it for California emissions I think). It stopped after a few seconds but I haven't seen it do that either. I have a new Raptor petcock, so I know thats good. Now, Ive always wondered if I needed  to rejet my carb for the elevation Im at (6,000 ft), plus I want to ride up into the mountains and theres a large difference in elevation just a few hours from my place.

The backfire is new to me as well, I already have the brass plug out so I can adjust the richness. That was making a few bikes backfire on here, so that might just be a tuning thing afterwards. Since I have to take my seat off to really get my battery in place, and I had the cone air filter off to spray fluid in it, I watched my carb and it would 'puff' out smoke and a bit of fire every once and a while before it got warmed up.

So I guess my questions are: What would make it sputter when I give it throttle? And what is making it 'puff'?   (I hope that all makes sense!)

Mine was doin that. I dumped the gas out,put some fresh gas in, flushed the carb bowl, & it went back to runnin right, Thats THE cheapest, easiest thing to sorting out that "craps out when I give it throttle" problem,. Mite not be it, but getting the gas out as a variable helps pin down the problem,

Okay,, after reading your post again,, start with the petcock test & check your oil. Check the air filter for gas, too,

46kmiles... this is old enough to need a new chain if it's been verslavied.
6kfeet...high enough to be jetted correctly from the factory.
cone filter...ok so check your jets anyway.
sitting a month, and overflowed the vents... float stuck, a few taps on the side of the carb to free it, a little seafoam to clean the boogers out, might want to use stabil.
sputtering, puffing, true backfires... might need to adjust the valves, idle might be too low.  True backfires are rare, being that it's been set up for a month, valves could be sticking... try marvel mystery oil.
raperizied... check your vac line plug for leaks.
CA emission BS... if you have a carbon canister under your swingarm, or your carb has a small line on the same side as the vac line at about the same level, and a tank vent with a line running to the canister, then you got CA emission BS.  This does not capture carb overflow out the vent tubes.
regular ol' backfire (technically afterfire) can indicate several issues.  Start with checking for loose header bolts, or muff clamp.  pops at shift will indicate that issue.  POW at shutdown is usually having a lean idle mixture setting.  1/8 to 1/4 turn will change the POW to a puff.
if it is a "craps out when I give it throttle" issue, then you need to clean the carb as your main jet is clogged.
