Just rebuilt my forks last month and used ATF. Works great! And easier to find.

How much oil in each leg, or what do you set  the oil level at?

I went step by step with the clymer. I used a liquid medicine syringe to get my correct distance that it calls for. Clymer says "add 441cc (14.91oz) and to check to oil level of 75mm(2.95in.)

I cheat. Drain forks. Collapse uppers into the sliders. Fill the tubes to the brim with the springs removed. Extend forks, drop the springs in, reinstall into the clamps.

ATF works fine, 15W40 motor oil works fine, 20W50 motor oil works fine. I still plan to swap mine out with GL-1 85W gear oil, can't stand fork dive, haven't found a springer I like for a reasonable cost yet.

That's about right wd. 15 oz. brings it to about an inch to inch and a half below the top with the springs in and top tubes collapsed.

We've had several occasions where someone had no oil at all and didn't realize it... so less won't hurt you.

Filling to the top will increase air pressure when bottoming out and increase the risk of blowing out the seals.  So don't do any wheelies... wd!   8-)
But for us normal folk, guesstimating the spacers are about 10" long, adding an inch of oil will only increase the pressure 10%.  That should be acceptable.

I've been running the same popped fork seals since 2/2/1998, the day I bought it brand new and rode it home. It loses a teaspoon or so per decade, not that big a deal.
