Title: Well hells bells - glad i found it .. wish I didnt
Post by Pine on 01/02/14 at 07:25:09

So the poor abandoned SAvage finally got cranked up after sitting for next to two months. She fired right up ..but just didn't sound right.. kinda "tiney" like the oil was low or something. (yes my savages talks to me)...

I look at the oil sight glass.. and holy CRAP.. the sight glass is full nearly to the top and its all foamy and way too yellow. Well we know it aint water.. not even condensation would do that. I am figuring gas. I drain the oil and have to buy another gallon to refill.. freick $29 for the T6.  Glad I found it before we went ridding.. hate that it happend at all.  Time for a wintertime carb re-build.

PS: the oil that was in there had less than 200 miles on it. Dernit... and I was counting on using the old oil for the new generator I have. Now I have two gallons of useless (polluted) oil.

Ok, now you got to tell us the rest of the story.

Raptor or stock petcock ??

Gas left on long term if Raptor ??

Obviously you are likely due a new float valve needle rubber bit for the float assembly ....

Yep and yep...

Raptor and no I did not turn off the ptcock...

The carb was "rebuilt"/tuned up about this time last time.

don't rely on the float valve to work every time. If you leave your raptor on all the time you are bound to drain at least one tank of gas into the crankcase. Its better to find it before the ride, if you don't expect to leave an oil slick behind your bike as you go and the excess liquid is pumped out the crankcase breather hose and filter.

Just had something similar happen to me.  A few words of advice, that may or may not be appropriate to your situation.

When you "rebuild" the carb, get at least a kit that has the float needle and seat:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/95-12-SUZUKI-LS650-SAVAGE-NEW-K-L-CARBURETOR-REBUILD-KIT-18-5064-/181280771098?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a352d0c1a&vxp=mtr

My problem was the seat.. specifically, the o-ring that seals that to the body of the carb.
Check the air filter and air box for gas.  (I drained about a pint of gas out of my air box, and the air filter was soaked. )

After draining the gas polluted oil, tip the bike left and right, forward and back, as far as you can and keep draining as much as you can.
(My legs are still sore from doing LS650 weight lifting  ::) )

Remove the spark plug, put a tad of oil in the cylinder.  Can't hurt, might help if you had some wash down from gas in the cylinder.
New oil, new filter,  and spin it with the starter without starting (just leave the plug out).  Don't run that starter too long, but run it enough to get the new oil moving around.
Repeat the drain and bike shaking procedures.   Refill with new oil again.  The oil filter is probably OK.. I didn't change mine again.

Put it all back together.. and if luck is with you, nothing got hurt from the gas in the oil.  I was lucky!!  :D

How many miles are you up to on the one that is 100K+?

Im not that techco about needles and seats, may I respectfully suggest that you turn you Raptor Off as you ride in your gate, switch the engine off when you are parked up.

My overenthusiastic anal approach to this issue - is that I reach down and turn the petcock off at the intersection about a mile from my house.  As I pull in my driveway the engine often dies, and I coast down the driveway to my garage.  At that point I know that if I don't ride again for a while - my bike is not sitting with a carb that is full of E10 just waiting to corrode my carb until the next ride.  I seldom turn the petcock off during my rides - but I always turn it off when I pass that intersection on the way home.  Works for me!

About 111K now.  And that is the bike that had the float seat failure.
I DO try to turn the petcock off.. but.. well.. I'm old.  CRS issues.

Anything can be a reminder. You could hang a leather braid on the handlebar. Youll see it & it will remind you to turn gas off. OR, youll see it & think
"I know im supposed to remember something because I put that there"..

drill a small hole thru the lever and hang a lead and small clip on your keys.

Well, Pine -- you actually win the "Raptorization resulting in a crankcase full of gasoline" contest that we started what, 4 years ago?

Although we will all acknowledge the Raptor didn't actually cause the failure, your needle valve gave up on you (likely due to E10 gasoline that we are all using now).

Routy now gets to say "I told you so !!!"

But he was expecting a win in the first few weeks of the contest and it never came .....

If you have any pics please put a couple up.  That is the most miles I have ever heard of let alone a single cylinder air cooled engine.  Quite a feat!

I saw a Savage in a Wal-Mart parking lot, ohh,, prollee 7 or 8 years ago.
Ratty ol' thing, what wasnt scratched up was rusty & the seat was pretty rough, but it had over 90,000 miles on it. Didnt look like more than 2 or 3 of them were from it being dragged behind a truck,, POint is, it MADE 90+ Thowzund Miles & based on the looks of it, it had not been given the best maintenance. Id bet it had never seen any fancy schmancy oil & Id bet it went a little further between oil changes than anyone here would dream of doing. And That brings me to the next point,,  I think the Rotella T- 15/40 is plenty good enough to keep these engines happy long enough to wear the rest of the poor thing OUT,,& the $$$ saved by not buying $8.00 a quart oil ( or whatever the current fancy schmancy oils cost) will help put gas in it to help wear it out,

I started out on Mobil 1, but went to Rotella T6 after about 2 oil changes, and never looked back.

Here is a recent picture of Thumper with some of his friends.
Taken yesterday.  A sad day, as we assisted in the funeral escort for a San Antonio Police Officer killed in the line of duty.

Actually this has been documented before in many other bikes.
