Title: Bike Jack / Stand
Post by pgambr on 12/23/13 at 21:00:06

Gents,

Looks like I'm going to need one as I'm going to do some work on the S40 and most likely by myself.  I plan to take the rear tire off and double check the hub and maybe replace the belt.  I looked at the threads that showed the home made ones.  Would a little 2 ton jack work pretty good as long as the bike won't drift?  I have one other bike so I would like to have a set-up that may work for both.  Thanks, best regards.

What's the other bike?...

It's a Kawasaki KLR (dual sport).  I have to admit I'm really taking a fondness to it.  The roads where I live are not remotely close to smooth and that 7 inches of travel soaks it up really well.

The homemade one should be able to work for both if take into account the higher clearance of the KLR...I've used a 2 ton jack before but it didn't feel super stable...

Isn't there a jacking plate under the battery you can use with a trolley jack? Mine has it and feels safe as houses. A 20 litre oil drum should be a perfect stand for the KLR. I use it on my DR, gets both wheels off the ground and is super stable.

On my 250 Yamaha WRX supermoto, I used a milk crate for a stand.
Tilted the bike over onto the front wheel and kickstand, slid the crate under and tilted it back... up off the ground it would come, then kinda jiggle it around till it was leveled out and steady.

If you can find a block thats taller than the swingarm is then lean the bike left, slide the bl;ock under the swingarm, stand the bike up & tie the handlebar off. Rear is off the ground, Or, hang it with a come along. Take the seat off & tie onto the frame, downside is it swings a bit, but Ive done it & won,

If there is a Harbor Freight store nearby. Check there for a motorcycle jack. If you can find some Harbor Freight coupons, there usually is one for 25% off. They also sell cargo straps cheap.

Yeah, a little while back I saw a deal on one.  I regret not buying it.  I'll keep a look out now.

I use one of those concrete decorator blocks you can buy at any hardware or garden store. Just lift up the front wheel a bit and roll it onto the block. high enough you can remove both wheels and it gives you a little height to work on the bike without cramping your neck.
