Title: Ignition
Post by savage1 on 12/19/13 at 10:57:14

this is a stumper ! 1986 Suzuki savage 650, will not start from the switch, i have traced and tested all components but still will not start from the start switch, now is it possible that i have a defective ignition pick up switch inside the stator compartment?right now i have spliced into the control box and put a toggle switch to start the bike.i have also found that the bike will also cut out all of a sudden will riding motor stops.

It wouldn't be the ignition pick-up...

My guess is a bad start button... may just need contacts cleaned...

The dieing while running may be a separate issue... or may be one of the cut-outs... sidestand, or clutch lever... These can be jumpered and bypassed to test...

What does this mean?  starter won't spin?  starter spins, but won't fire?

and why do jump to the control box (which you're going to have explain... are you talking about the TDI or decomp control box?)

Hey savage1, can you send a picture or diagram of your toggle set up, what kind of switch you bought etc. (think like, wiring for dummies).
Sudden cut out sounds like a short somewhere. I don't know the electronic components of a bike but I know in some of my cars there were solenoids that, when they heated up a hairline crack would open up and they'd die. When they cooled off it shrunk and it would run. Good luck!
