Title: New CD of my 1960's band finally released
Post by Gyrobob on 12/16/13 at 07:07:44

This is a curious rock music thing.  There is currently a growing interest in SF Bay Area rock music from the 1960's.  Why, I do not know.

I had to work my way through school in the 1960's.  My only funding was from rock bands.   One of those bands did some recording on RCA and Capitol.  We were known originally as the Trolls, then as the Stained Glass after RCA renamed us.

A guy (not even alive when this band was recording this stuff) who is a fan of that music, somehow gathered up all the demos, unreleased material, practice tapes, etc., of that band and convinced Ace Records to put out a CD.  That guy is Alec Palao.  He has been nominated for Grammies before for work he has done with other compilations.  A skillful fellow, a good bass player, and a nice guy.

The CD is at Amazon and in a few record stores on the coasts.

Cool, eh?  The band is finally selling some copies of its material.  Only 45 years too late.

Here is the Amazon ad:

Thanks.

I think it is cool, too.  Makes me wonder if anything will come of it.

The division of Ace Records in the UK that put this thing out is known to be really conservative,... they don't do anything like this unless they are fairly sure it'll make some money for them.  I hope they are right!!

Gyro I've noticed that a lot of the old rock is popular with the younger crowd. In fact this is nothing new if you think about it! Rockabilly music was revived back in the 1980s by groups like The Stray Cats and now warrants a rather large cult following in many countries.

I think this groups music will follow the same path.

Yes, the concept of vintage rock coming around again is not new, but this deal is due to a resurgence in that unique time/place in the SF Bay Area in the mid to late 1960's.

It would tickle me a LOT for, as you say, "this groups music will follow the same path."  For the first time in my life I'll finally be getting some royalties.  Nickels and dimes, yes, but it is the principle of the thing.

Big congrats! As a music fan and part-time amature musician myself, this is one of the coolest things I've read in awhile ... classic-era S.F.B. area rock group's material revived! You must be proud ... way to go!

I remember the name "Trolls", but could not tell you anything about the music unless I heard it again.  Even then, there is no guarantee with my memory.
OK, so which face are you on the album cover we are looking at ?
There is nothing like seeing a pic of yourself from way back when.
I lived in Cupertino during that time; moved away in the summer of '67 after high school.

I thot that unless youd sold the rights to your music you could get paid royalties no matter how long its been.

If you go to the Amazon listing, you can hear about 20-30 seconds of each track.  Maybe that will jog your memory.

Here are a couple pics that are in the liner notes.  I'm on the right in the first pic, and I'm the tall one in the polka dot pic.

In the CD cover pic in the first post of this thread, I am second from the left.

You can get royalties from the albums sold through legitimate sources, but Capitol and RCA no longer sell any of our stuff.  The CDs that have been sold over the past few years are all unauthorized bootleg copies.

The vinyl album we did in 1969 on Capitol titled "Crazy Horse Roads" is selling on ebay for $100 to $200 now.  Capitol never gave us any copies, so several years ago I bought a few off of ebay for $20 or $30.  Maybe if I keep them long enough, I'll be rich!!!  ;-)

"Can you get us a sample?"

Here is the link to the Ace Records listing of the CD.  Maybe the samples at the bottom will work.

If they do, please keep in mind this stuff is very 1960's!!!   It is not very mainstream, either.  The album on Capitol was an attempt at pseudo mainstream, but this CD is not very top40-ish.  Too many chords, melodies, harmonies, and words not solely "lovesong" lyrics.
