Title: Side car?
Post by S-P on 12/08/13 at 20:26:24

Anyone ever add a side car to their Savage?  I have a REALLY great dog that would look awesome riding in one.  I saw this on craigslist tonight.

Someone did post a photo of a new S40 and side car on the forum some months ago. They seemed happy with the arrangement. I think the side car may have been a Czech Velorex, but I have been known to be wrong many times. I can offer no personal opinion as to the S40's ability to pull one but many English 650's were used for that purpose from the 1920's to the early 1960's. You had better check how you would mount the side car to the bike.

I considered a sidecar.  http://www.dmcsidecars.com/ makes a mount for the Savage.  They have a bare frame so you could make your own body, such as cargo box.

Holy moly! where was that thing last year? That is a great price for one.... mounts would not be too hard to fab if you took your time, would be a great winter project and almost worth the drive to get it, even from florida.

Shipping would be less maybe....

Oldrider, it's the first sidecar I've ever seen on craigslist and the ones I've seen at dealers are outrageous.  In AZ we have 11 1/2 months of sidecar weather.  I have a good fabrication friend who builds dune buggies from scratch.  Now all I need is a grand in my pocket....  :-/

I would wonder if this rider didnt also have a 10 cent horse ride in his back yard. REally, how long could You ride a Theme bike before you felt a little stupid?

I found this  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=an_bINlTc_k
Cool rig, I think it's called a Cozy. Looks like a good match for a Savage, also a good example of a loud cam chain.

Putting an outrigger on a bike so it cant lean ( except the wrong way) is just too scary for me. Besides, its no longer a motorcycle. It doesnt lean & swoop thru turns, Id just as soon have a Miata as a bike w/ a sidecar.
Or, better still, an underpowered old sports car. But theyre expensive now.

HA! Those are great! I'm a carpenter by trade so it would be cool to buy the just a frame and build my own.  I love the vintage bikes they are attached to, some cool ideas for modifying the Savage. I may need to hit the junk yard to find some old parts.

If I was gonna build one Id want to weld up the frame & cover it with the same cloth as a wing & slap the clear butyrate dope on till it sucked up tight. A guy could build it light & strong that way,
Light & strong, thats important in planes,
Id also want a brake on the outside wheel,,& if possible, Id Rather see it driven, too, but that would be hard, a brake isnt that hard to include.

On hard braking the sidecar pushes the front left if its not equipped w/ a brake,

In Arizona you have to get a specific MC license for a 3 wheeled bike of any kind. Interesting...

Same thing in SC.  3 wheeled vehicle endorsement required. You can't even get a car titled in this state without a driver's license.

I like the concept of side cars with articulated mounting so it feels more like a bike on corners and doesn't feel so tippy on right turns.

If my wife is riding in it, I don't think I'll tip over.  She's built for comfort, not for speed.   ;) Bwahahaha!

I have no idea what kinda "comfort level" she is built for, but what I said about braking with weight outboard steering ya left unless the sidecar has a brake wasnt me just kidding around. YOu take a 150 pounds of sidecar & drop 180 pounds of "comfort" in it, youve got 330 pounds with a center of mass at about 2 feet outboard on a bike that isnt that front heavy,

Id go hunting experienced sidecar users & see what they say..
Try thi

motorcycle sidecar forum

JOG, she's pretty "comfortable"  ;)  She nixed the sidecar because we just dropped a grand on getting her car fixed. Oh well.

Sidecars arent known for being plush. I couldnt ride in one more than 10 or 15 minutes Id bet,My knees wont tolarate being in a generall straight, legs out front position. I simply cant use a Lane recliner. Lazy Boy or a regular chair, Sidecars dont usually have doors. Im not seein it,, You guys hop in the car & go for a ride & talk,

I talked to a lady that has ridden in a sidecar.....and who has also spent 5,000 miles on the back of a V-Strom on a single trip round the US.

She said there is no way she wants to ride in a sidecar for more than a mile or two.  They are bumpy and jolting to ride in, you have no view of the left side of the road, and the riding position is not good for long distances.

That's good to know. I think if I get one it will be more for my dog anyway.  ;)

Some people think they can just unhook it & ride or slip up next to it, hook it up & drive away. Theyre kinda ticklish to set up right. Maybe a guy could mark all the bits that adjust the aim of it, IDK, but, best I can tell, theyre not like hookin a tractor up to a plow & workin a while & goin to swap it for a different implement, just simple as pie,, sidecars have to be set up so when its oout level, the bike is set upright. I dunno why they cant be built to allow a bike to lean,,

Title: Re: Side car?
Post by Dave on 12/17/13 at 09:31:50

Flexit and Equallean made some that allowed you to lean.

Coolniss!  Now, is that just another portable torture chamber? I cant picture myself IN a sidecar..

The flex is interesting but when I think "sidecar" I'm thinking tooling around town with my dog in the car for the ride. In AZ those covered things would be a riding crock pot slow cooker!
