Title: What is cold like?...
Post by Serowbot on 12/06/13 at 21:59:18

We are having a cold snap this week... Temps below freezing at night and barely 50f in the day...
I know we'll be back in the 70's soon,... but, just for the challenge, and in order to appreciate what some of you hard-cores go through,.. I took a little ride...

46f,... I had my long johns on,... and a very heavy V-Pilot leather jacket (darn thing must weigh 10lbs)... a thick scarf, and gloves with fingers still in them...

I was pleased, and surprised, the FI Sporty starts easy and purrs.. as if it has no idea it's cold...
I take off in seconds and it never skips a beat...

Pretty comfortable at speeds under 40mph...(no windshield)... as I get over 40, it starts feeling like zippers are coming down on my jacket... (they aren't... it's just the wind pressing cold leather too close to my skin)...
...(I maybe shoulda' wore a sweatshirt under the jacket)...
Breath fogs the faceshield at lights... (I breathe downwards through my mouth)...
Coldest parts are my forearms and chest... (amazing how the cold transfers... even though this jacket is very airtight)... (I guess this is the where the logic of layers comes in)...
My knees felt a little chill as well, but not intolerable...

Anyway,... it was overall, invigorating...(and this is only because I know I don't have to endure 6 months of it)... ;D...

I feel for you guys...  (you're crazy)...
46f is my limit...
PS... Gerry and George say hi... they showed up in cars...
(I was never the sharpest tool)... ;D...
:-?...

Okay,... now you guys try 110f... :-?...
...(I realize this is not technically possible for many of you,.. so, just turn your furnace as high as it will go, put your helmet on, and stick a 1800watt blow dryer under the faceshield blowing full blast)...
... and set your pants on fire...
(If you actually ride on days when it's below 40f,... you can skip the pants on fire part........... you're tough enough)... :-?...

Spring is coming... ;)...

Invigorating is a very good way to describe it.  I rode to work when it was 22 & 25 degrees last week.  Pretty bizarre feeling riding your bike when there is frost on everything.  You just prepare for it kind of like your going skiing - long john's, ski gloves w/ liners, balaclava.  After a few days of that 50 degrees doesn't feel that bad. :o

I mean,..    DANG!...
Gosh, golly, dang!...

Okay...
So tomorrow,.. I'm gonna' get up at 5am... fortify myself with a quart of vodka... put on everything I own,..
Drop a tray of ice cubes down my pants, and head out into the just barely below freezing co...l....d.......

No I'm not...   you win...
;D...

I grew up up in a cold climate where life goes on even if it was cold.  Everyone still still had to go to work regardless.  If you didn't want to go you didn't have to, but they would probably find someone else who would.  You get used to it.

YOu know its cold when you can feel the heat from the car ahead of you following at about 60 yards. Another sign is when ytou take a well traveled road & then go a block off that path to ride a road that is just a neighborhood road & can feel the difference.
Ive been known to ride wearing thermals, jeans, leather chaps, a snow mobile suit, another set of chaps & STILL be so blasted cold I was whining. The upper body was very well dressed, too..
One thing Ive found that made a BIG difference is a Large pistol carrier with a fleece liner opened up & put across the chest. A balaclava is a wonderful thing.

Woke up; coffee going;  13 deg outside right now;  not riding anywhere any time soon.

Yup, if it were me, i'd have my thermos mug in the "warm" truck and wave at you as you drive by  ;D

My below 30 days are over, unless i'm feeling crazy that day.... maybe just to prove I can still do it 8-)

On my Savage......high 50's are just too cold to ride with the gear I own.  On the ST1100 that I just bought...the windshield and fairing make a huge difference, and when I rode it home the temp was in the low 50's and I never got cold.

Every once in a while we drop down in the -10F for a few days.  I know it is really cold when the snow squeaks under your feet, you get in the car and the seat foam doesn't compress and feels like a board, and the stick shift feels like you are pulling a broom handle through wet concrete.

Bot, I give you credit for trying to find out how us
cold climate riders cope.
Yet if you really want to know how it feels, then
come on up and take a ride around the area.. lol

This a.m. it was near 18 degrees outside at 7:30. Now
it is almost 11a.m. and it is warming up. It now is 24..
It is   forecasted to NOT get above freezing which is 32, today
and tomorrow..
Burrr does not even cover it.

I am not doing the Olympia toy run today. It is just too cold
for me. I wimped out.

I don't like riding and shivering. That takes all the enjoyment
out of it for me.

I have ridden and gotten so cold that a warm shower even took
awhile to warm myself.
Yesterday I did see one guy on his bike. I thought he really had a
set and was brave, as their is no way I even want to attempt these
temps on a bike..

IF you ever see a gal on a bike and she resembles the Michelin Tire Guy,
that could just possibly be me. Seems I have to layer even in temps above 50.
Enjoy your 70's when they return and take some rides for us that aren't so fortunate to ride right now... Hugs..   :-* kim

In the Northwest today temps are supposed to drop down to a windchill factor of -5 to 0 degrees with temps in the single digits. Still see lots of bikes on the road. In fact just watched on the news a toy drive run by hundreds of bikes.
Serowbot! At 46, we slather on the sunscreen and ride in our t-shirts!

When it is cold out I stick a rubber hot water bottle down the front of my jacket.  You can also pull over and make a great cup of hot chocolate!

Hot coca is a great way to warm up.
Wow were now in the midst of a heat-wave.
It is now 29 degrees out.  ;D
That is a difference of  ;D 10 from last night at
this time as was 19 then..
I work in the back of the store along with the
inventory. It stays cold and with the colder weather
I have been layering like I was on the bike.
Tonight I may actually be able to take a layer off..
Serowbot, your 70's may return soon, ours will not
for several months.
So enjoy and how about some more of your great
video's.. We need some of Gerry as well.. Hugs. :) kim

I live in Hawaii now (don't hate me!). But I lived most of my life in the Seattle/Tacoma area. I did spend a winter in Great Falls (-30!!). The last two years I lived in Washington I rode to work every day. One time it was about 24 degrees out, but dry roads. I rode my dual sport. It was so cold, I thought the water in my eyes was going to freeze.

We have a former member here who lives there now. Uses a sidecar,

Main thing keeping me from riding right now is the white stuff all over the place. I know what it's like to ride in 100+ temps and what its like to ride when the temps are in the low 20s, all without ever having to leave to state  ;D In Misery, if you don't like the weather, just wait an hour because it will change LOL. I'm starting to show my age, I want a pair of heated gloves now.
