Title: Engine Noise
Post by pgambr on 12/01/13 at 15:59:30

Perhaps someone can point me in the right direction.  Their is a faint clicking noise that sounds like it is coming from the top left of the engine when sitting on the bike.  It becomes more apparent when the rpms are between 2500 - 4500 (I'm just guessing).  At first I thought it was the cam chain but, my understanding is that shouldn't be a concern till 12K miles.  It runs strong; although, if it is something I can correct before any serious damage occurs I surely would. Any advice would be appreciated.  Best regards.

if you got a noise, chase it down with a mech's stetho

cam chain death rattle is on the right, top rear of the filter cover.

as far as mileage goes... don't count on it... check it.

I take it the mechs stetho is pulling it apart?

Noooo.... Harbor Freight sells them for less than $5...
It's just like a doctors stethoscope but without the flat bit on the end...
You just put the end of the tube at different paces and try to find the noise source... (I took the end stick bit off, and just use the chrome tube part.. seems to work better for me)...
... you can also just put your ear to the handle end of a long screwdriver and touch the tip at different places (just can't do corners very well)...

...(cam-chain is on the right side... and the sound is usually in the lower case)......but sound location can be tricky...
Your noise sounds more like valves at upper left of engine... Are they adjusted?...

Will do, there is a HF about an hour from where I live.  What about an O'Reilly's?

A piece of rubber tubing will also work.....just not as fancy.  Put one end up to your ear...the other is poked around the areas you think the noise is coming from.

Common rattles on the Savage are the speedometer and the headlight.

From the area you are describing....it might be the compression release touching the exhaust rocker arm.  Maybe the springs is broken or the cable is too tight.  Or it could be a loose spark plug.

I had noise and it was on left side. But it turn out to be the chain anyway.

I went and picked up a the mechanic stethoscope and it is amazing what you can hear.  When sitting on the bike it is definitely on the top left of the head.  I'm guessing it has to do with the cam shaft  in some capacity?

Assuming so, I suppose it would be a good time to replace that as well as anything else.  The cam timing chain sounded a little loose, not excessive; although, the 12 K inspection sounds spot on.  If you have any thoughts that would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks and best regards.

If you can take the front valve adjustment cover off and do the best you can to look at the condition of the cam.....look for pitting of the cam lobes.  If there are rough or flat spots there....most likely it was from using an oil that does not have sufficient ZDDP.

Post by pgambr on 12/02/13 at 08:44:15

What's ZDDP?  I'm pretty sure the cam will need some work.  Will I have to pull everything apart?  I'm guessing this would be an ideal time to do the Versey tensioner.  What else should I consider?  Thanks again.

Push the compression release arm to Home,, make sure the spring has it all the way back.

I like a stethoscope with a hose for homing in on where a noise is coming from, then I stick a rod in it to listen to see what kind of internal clicking/clacking/squeeling noises are coming out.

I'm going to do a bit of research; although, I guessing Dave is probably correct.  Is it going to sound a little rough for 5K then seize.?  What do you think?  What a the general scenarios?  Thanks.

Title: Re: Engine Noise
Post by Dave on 12/02/13 at 12:47:53

Try the compression release first as JOG2 suggested.

Then make sure the spark plug is not loose.

Then take the valve adjustment cover off and see if you can see anything inside that makes  you think the cam or lifters are worn.  There is a post a long time ago where the fellows rocker arms were just about worn completely through......no idea how to find that old thread and I can't rememember who posted it.

plUG OUT, LEFT SIDE INSPECTION COVER OFF, SOCKET, EXTENSION, RATCHET, OOOps, caplox, sorry.. spin the motor over & see if you feel anything. With the valve adj. covers off, get it to TDC & see what kinda slop is in the rockers. Get a finger on the cam, etc,, just give it a good goin over,, Mite even be a good time to dump the oil into an aluminum pan & go fishing with a magnet..

I'm going to look at the head and the cam chain in the near future.  Should I get some new gaskets?  Thanks for the insight.

If the side cover comes off okay, you wont need a gasket, odds are, it wont. The head cover is just a pookey gasket,, so, just get the right pookey,,

I ordered new gaskets from Parts Fish http://www.partsfish.com/  I'm not sure where they are in the grand scheme of online parts, but they seem to have about everything and I could buy just the gaskets I need instead of a whole kit from Ron Ayers.  They ship in a couple of days so I'd say tear everything down and figure out what you need. Every time you buy something it will cost you 7.00 shipping for each separate order. I could have saved 15.00 if I had waited a day or two into my tear down. We have a REALLY good motorcycle junkyard in Phoenix and I've found all the internal parts I need really cheap.

How much did ya spend? YOu shouldnt need but the clutch cover gasket,
Last one I got I walked into a shop, not a Suzuki, just a shop,, they have a machine they stick a CD into & a printer lookin thing with a blade that cuts out the gasket. Cost me $14.00, took about 10 minutes,,

I found a shop here that does the computer gasket trick for about 18.00 but I'd have to drive across town (no such thing as a short quick trip in Phoenix). I think I got it online for about 17.00 but I bought a Raptor petcock and a couple other things and shipping was 6.95 for the bunch. When I pulled the clutch and stator sides both gaskets were trashed. From my VW days I'm not a big fan of re-using gaskets even if they look OK, they always seemed to leak.

I know nothing of Phoenix, but if its even close to a trip across Dallas, Id pay $20.00 to avoid a trip across. You cant get in a wreck ordering from home.

JOG, not sure if you were referring to my post or the one before.  I haven't bought anything yet.  If it doesn't cost to much I'd assume line up everything that I know I'll need.  Regardless, thanks for the help.

Not the heavy duty industrial grade Reynolds..... it will last like 12 hours outside and 3 days inside....and if you double fold with the reflective side out, you can squeak an extra day and yer hat still can't be penetrated.. :D

Well, Yea, thats all true enough, BUT, we all know what a cheapskate Rowboat is,, so we know he is usin the cheapest tin foil made,,
Im just tryin to help the guy, man,, I cant change the fact that he is a ( literally) terminal cheapskate.

I buy the industrial restaurant rolls of tin foil at Costco because I have a big head.  Those short grocery store rolls of foil were breakin' me....

We truly are bunch O crazies.. & BTW, I actually do get the restaurant roll from Sams. Lots better deal,,& we buy TP & Paper towels by the case there. IN Fact, its time to restock,,its just a bad time to peel that $$$ out,.,

POint well taken,BUT,, when its time for tin foil, its just TIME! A guy can fake it on the paper towels,, heck, dish rags work,, in a serious enough bind, there are things that CAN be used in place of toilet paper, but tin foil? Man,, when its time for a hat, its just time & there IS no substitute I am aware of,,
Is this or is this not a classic case of thread drift?

Back to important topics.  I started up the s40 when the temp got up in the high 60s one afternoon.  The noise was significantly less.  When the engine noise was at it's worst the highs were 45 - 50.  Would that be indicative of a valve issue?  Thanks.

Title: Re: Engine Noise
Post by S-P on 12/08/13 at 16:44:53

In low temps is the noise louder at startup and then dies down after warmed up? If so, I'd suspect your oil weight might be too heavy and not circulating to the head until it gets thinned by heat. My old VW's did that.

Title: Re: Engine Noise
Post by pgambr on 12/12/13 at 15:09:49

Some times the noise is almost nonexistent.  And sometimes it comes and goes.  I dumped the oil and put in Rotella 15-40.  It made everything feel a lot smoother.  Does anyone have any thoughts?  Thanks.  I'm waiting for a day where the highs are decent to pull everything apart.  It gets old wrenching on it under the car port when it is 45 out.

When it is in neutral it sounds normal as well?    :-?
