Title: Number of Savages/S40 sold
Post by Ragnar444 on 11/24/13 at 13:10:17

Would love to now the sales figures and how they compare to other motorcycles. I also wonder if it holds the record for the longest bike in continuous production with very little need for improvement. The power train seems indestructible!

I don't know the exact figures but if I remember correctly it debuted in 1986 (in the U.S. anyway) and there were a couple of years that it was dis-continued but gave a great comeback with the only changes through out it's production being cosmetic such as a change in handle bars and paint scheme.

Others will probably know a lot more but it is a very reliable bike that really doesn't get the appreciation it deserves.

One even told me that it was a disposable bike and was never any good, if that is the case why has it been in almost constant production since '86 with no true changes?

I now wish I hadn't sold mine, but I had extremely late bills piling up on me that needed paying.

While sales of the LS650 were discontinued in the U.S. for several years around the early 90's, the Savage/S40 has been available in Canada every year since it's 1986 debut ... I too am amazed that Suzuki has kept it in continuous production for so long with essentially no changes (OK, so it did go from being a 4 speed originally to a 5 speed! LOL!).
Every model year for the past few (well since 2010 anyways ...) I have expected to see the LS dropped from Suzuki's line-up, but it keeps re-appearing!

Is it possible to determine the number manufactured from the serial numbers?

Does anything beat the Kawi KLR you long term production?  Same everything since 87, except smaller rings and cosmetic plastic.

Royal Enfield Bullet holds that medal, Bullets have been made since 1931 and the model from 1956 to 1995 was basically unchanged until they starting producing the AVL lean burn engine   :)

Completely forgot the Honda 90 series beginning in the mid '60's.
A 1969 SL-90 was my first bike. I suspect that engine is still being made in some form.
Despite my constant abuse nothing could stop it. ;D

Yep...the Honda 50/65/70/90 cc engines are still being built and used in the Honda Line.  The Mini-Trail Z50 was first made in 1968 and has morphed into the current Z50 lineup and the Monkee bikes.....so that is a run form 1968 to 2013 and beyond (45 years and counting).

The Chinese have copied this engine and are making cheap copies (Lifan) to put in their Mini Trail copy bikes....or selling you the engines as Honda replacements.

pal of mine had a Honda Mini Trail back in the early 70's when we were kids ... was a lot of fun! Notice that the 2013 version in the pic is equipped with directionals and a brake light ... street-legal? How would that 'lil Bike even be seen on roadways populated by monster pick-ups and SUVs??
