For over 18000 miles my bike has started and run well.  

Recently, when cold, it started acting like it's out of gas.  Twice, after switching to reserve,  I've stopped at the filling station and found I still had a 1/2 tank.

When the bike warms up it runs just fine.

Suspecting the petcock, I pulled the vac line.  Some gas odor but no gas.  Put suction on the line (puh), still no gas, seemed to hold vacuum.

Before I plunk down cash for a Raptor 660 petcock, is there something else I should be checking out?

I guess what my real question is.....

If the petcock is bad, would the problem go away when the bike warms up?  Or do petcock issues happen regardless of if the bike is warm or cold?

Symptom sounds like the vac line is leaking air,.. more than a bad diaphragm in the pet itself...
When cold,.. the line may become more stiff and allow air leak at the connection...
I'd try a new rubber vac line... if you really want to keep the stock pet...

18000 miles and you haven't replaced that thing yet? Yours must be an anomaly - mine quit at just over 1000 miles! CheapCycleParts.com sells the real deal, and with shipping just over $30. BTW, try running on PRI and see if the problem persists. If not, time to raptor up.

Thanks, all advice makes total sense!  My guess is that the carb end of my vac line is leaking, probably due to several tank removals over the years.  When the bike heats up, the metal nipple expands and the rubber softens, perhaps stopping the leak.

Rather than mess around, I found an "open box" Raptor petcock on Ebay for $15, including shipping.  Should fix the issue, if not, I guess I'll have to regroup.

My stock unit was still going fine at 15K miles. The older Made in Japan ones are better than the newer Made in China ones. I think I still have it around here someplace. Replacing the stock vacuum line with silicone dirt bike gas cap vent hose makes a world of difference (and you can choose your color too).

Follow up for posterity:

Changed the petcock, bike runs great.  Looks like issue solved.

I plugged the vac port on the carb with a little cap I got at Autozone.  Had to buy a 6-pack of caps, so I guess I have 5 extra.  Used both the wire clamps from the original vac line to help secure the cap.

The Raptor petcock has a smaller port than the stock petcock.  My original fuel line was loose (probably stretched out).  A new 1/4" fuel line from Autozone did the trick and fit snugly on both the new petcock and the carb.  The new line appears to be thicker-walled than the factory fuel line, so I feel really good about it.

Those caps only last a year or so.
The oxides of halitosis eat'm up.
Might be a good idea to put a coat of paint on'm.
I'm been meaning to see if copper line caps would fit.
Or used 22 brass.

The Raptor Mod has to be the simplest, least expensive modification that has the biggest performance impact on this motorcycle.  I road a year with the stock petcock and a year with the Raptor.  What a difference in the two years!

Yes mine started this last spring but it soon warmed up outside and I didn't bother with it. But now that its cold again it has reappeared. Time to get a raptor replacement.

Yamaha part number 5LP 24500-01-00, I think. $25 and 30 minutes with tank on bike.
