Title: Removing Passenger Pegs
Post by Ragnar444 on 10/21/13 at 10:09:14

Is there a trick to removing the Allen head bolts holding the rear foot pegs to the swing arm? I can't get them to budge! I have a 2008 S40.

Put a deep socket thats pretty close to the allen wrench size on an extension. Push it till youre afraid something is about to give up. Spank it with a hammer, dont smash it, just start popping it while its got torque on it. Its like using an impact. Mite drizzle some penetrating oil & let it soak a while first. Be aware that the extension WILL bounce & if you have your fingers closed around it, its gonna hurt,, Use your palm & be ready for it coming back,, gloves help.,& yes, Ive used this method many times.,

Thanks for the advice but it is a recessed Allen head bolt. How would I get a socket around it? I can't get enough leverage with an Allen wrench to bust it loose.

Dude,, poke the allen wrench in the head of the bolt, then slide the socket down the allen, with the extension on it,, its like a cheater pipe..

I totally get what you are saying.  There isn't room in between the Allen bolt and the tire for the bolt to even come out.

Nope, I assumed the wheel was out..
Glad ya got it, I was afraid I was unclear.

Without taking the tire off, you'll have to cut the bolt in half.  Unscrew it out as far as you can then use a hack saw that the blade secures in the handle without a frame around it to cut it.  It's a tight fit but it can be done.

The rear tire was off. I just needed the right tool to apply the right amount of leverage. Mission accomplished!

Thanks for the help all! Picked up an 8mm Allen bit for my socket set and put a little muscle into it. Problem solved ;D

Its the way ya went at it, it worked fine.. Im still in the socket on an extension way of thinking,, Maybe one day Ill buy metric ratchet type allens,, Ive got a 1/2" drive set of SAE. Set screw holds the allen part in the part that slips on an impact or ratchet. I needed that when I was a mechanic for the Western Company, working on oilfield trucks & pumps.

8 mickey mouse (mm) is 5/16 inch, so if you already have SAE allen head sockets, you're golden.

And I'm off to bed.

I just noticed yesterday that one of my passenger pegs is actually loose, so I'm going to have to do the reverse to get it tightened back up. (I still use it for 2up riding from time to time)  :D

Thanks for the excellent advice everyone. I've owned a number of street bikes over the years of various sizes each one being more complex. This is the ultimate in simplicity and well engineered reliability. Having a blast tearing down my '08 S40 in preparation for a Ryca CS-1 conversion.
