Title: Compression, spark, no start
Post by TheProduct2007 on 10/18/13 at 09:49:53

Ok so after fixing the head gasket and dealing with the starter clutch gears I have ran into another problem.  The motor will rotate, there is compression and spark but it doesn't want to fire. I replaced the spark plug, I put on the raptor petcock. I tried with throttle and with none. I've tried with choke and with none. The evap tube coming from the engine isn't connected to the air box if thought that might be the issue but if it's just running air to the air box then it shouldn't show any difference if it was running air to the outside

TRy shooting a SMALL shot of ether into the intake.

Haha, after you put in the raptor, did you put some petrol back in the tank? ;D

I know you said you have spark, but thats w/o compression, toss a new plug in it & be Certain that battery is Hot. I hope you blew the dirt from around the plug, if you didnt, it went in the jug.

I didn't see where you said what the actual battery voltage is.  12v is not enough, even if it turns over.  12.65v is 100%, 12.0 is 45%, and 11.6 is 20%.   I think mine was 12v when it stopped starting, but it sounded like it was cranking fine.

But you can try push starting with a weak battery helping,

I did replace the spark plug and insured the area was clear and clean of dirt and debris.
The battery
is at full charge when I put it on there and tried to crank it.

Then check Voltage to the CDI box. & a Volt reading on the battery is gonna help you.Its Gotta be 12.5 or better,,

Thanks for all y'all's help but I've run out of spare time messing with it. I'm going to have to take it to a mechanic, from what I was told the timing is off

Then go back in & set the cam right,

That's what I was thinking to because I couldn't think of any way else it could be uniquely off unless it was 180 degrees off but I've decided that my mechanic skill level at the moment is way to low to complete the work on this bike.  I need to get a little bit more training behind my belt before I can finish a project like this.

I disagree,, You got it together. All you need is to follow the manual & set the crank timing in the left side cover to the slot in there & then lay the cam in, lobes down, with the line on the gear horizontal. If you can get the cam chain ON, you can get the timing. Youre about to drop a load O Jack,,& next time it needs work in there youll be scared. You can win this, be patient, go SLOW, remember to always turn the motor the way it spins while youre setting up. You can check the timing before you pull the chain, You may only be off a tooth,

If you can turn a wrench and FOLLOW instructions, you should be able to do it.  There are plenty of people on here who are quite willing to help anyone who needs it.

Last time I put a cam in 180 out, it backfired like crazy.

I marked the spot where we took it off, both on the chain and on the sprocket and insured that we put the chain back on the right tooth.  I even took the chain back off because when me and my buddy put it on I knew he put it on the wrong chain marking because the mark I made was larger.
I would love to work on the bike myself and get it into running condition on my own but I don't have anymore spare time.  I work over 90+ hours a week plus I'm a full time student.  I live with my parents for the time being until I get out of college and they don't want a "project" sitting in their garage and I miss riding so much.  I think I have a serious addiction problem to motorcycles.

The Clymer Manual is vague...very vague.  I followed the manual to the T and I'm still off.
