Title: Dies at high speed.
Post by oceantransistor on 10/14/13 at 01:25:56

Here's what's happening.

The bike was sitting for a week.  I turned it on and let it run with the choke for a bit to make sure it was good.  It's been chilly the last few nights.  The throttle sounded a little weak once it got on the rode.  When I got to highway speeds it would get up to about 55 mph and slowly stall.  I would have to pull over and use the choke again to get it going but it would die again at about 55 mph.  It only started up again if I pulled the choke all the way out.

Where should I start the diagnostics?

Could this be the air filter, dirty carb, dirty fuel filter?  It's bee running fine and this just decided to happen.

It has a raptor petcock and a dina muffler that have given me no issues.

Hey Ocean had you done any work to the bike at all the week before it was left sitting?  Also do you normally get the bike running at highway speeds or is that something new? Are the raptor and dyna your only mods?

Sounds like a possible vacuum petcock failure.  I had similar symptoms. Fuel would stop under low vacuum conditions. At low speed under moderate load it would stall when coming to a stop.  At highway speeds, it would just quit, just like running out of gas.  Switching the petcock to prime would allow the engine to pick up again before it came to a complete stop.

The reason I mention this, is because the symptoms would get worse in cooler weather.  I assumed my petcock diaphram was getting stiff, and in cooler temperatures, the engine vacuum just couldn't hold it open.

A Raptor petcock solved the problem.

Check the vacuum line out, or, put a new one on & KNOW..
Do the petcock test

OR, since you know its getting a Raptor petcock anyway,, do that,
But first, run it in prime,

& Drain the bowl on the carb into a jar, see if its gunky in there,

Check the fuel filter.  Also, check that the fuel line doesn't have any slight deformation.  Sometimes the fuel line will kink a bit.

Generic fuel delivery test is to pull the line to the carb and test the fuel flow as it goes through everything -- it should be more than a cup a minute or else you will have issues.

Has anyone questioned your fuel itself?

Bad gas happens .....

Yea, how Does it run at 25 or 30..? Good acceleration from a stop? Hows the idle?

It has a Raptor Petcock that I installed a couple of years back and a Dyna muffler that I installed last year.

When the bike was sold to me it had a fuel filter which I switched up three years ago.

I had the bike maintenanced back in February and all checked out fine.

It's running weak and dies at highway speeds.  It only fires up with the choke all the way out.

I haven't done any work to it in months as it's been running perfectly.

I run it on the highway for about 5 miles back and forth a few times a week to get to work.  It has been getting a little colder but I ran it on a warm afternoon when it died.

The horror!

You're not running it enough to keep the battery charged.
Try charging it.

Try the easy stuff first like putting fresh gas in and charging up the battery. If she still stalls out at 55+ then re-evaluate.

Yep,,

BUT I dont remember getting the answer,,
From a stop to 40 or so, how is it? Describe the acceleration, strong, taper off, halting,, pick a good word or 20

Enough, already --- Ocean has some things to check and then he needs to get back to us with further information from those checks.

Rehashing all the things he needs to check when he hasn't had a chance to check anything yet isn't doing him any good.

So far ....

Test fuel flow rate through everything (pull the fuel line at carb inlet) flow must be at greater than a cup a minute.

Air filter dry and clean
(when installed does not block off air port in mouth of carburetor)

Recharge the battery fully.  Test voltage over 13 volts fully charged.

Replace the gasoline with fresh gas

Make sure the choke goes all the way back in when the engine is warm

Run the bike and report back.

I'll be breaking down the bike tomorrow to see what's up.

I do have a few more things to add.

When this happened a couple of years ago I would just turn the idle screw up and the bike would run but very high.

Could this also be a spark plug problem?

Unlikely. Do your carburetor tests and report back. Let's eliminate one issue at a time instead of tossing more items into the mix.

Its not time to be tearing things apart.

I didn't have the tools or space to take care of the bike myself as it also needed a new back tire and breaks so I took it to a bike shop for repairs.

They cleaned out the carburetor and put a new gas filter on.

They also recommended a new clutch as the old one was worn down.  The bike has 19,000 miles on it so I guess that might make sense.

At this point the bike runs really well and the clutch catches the torque extremely well but I it has a lot more back fire coming out of the Dyna muffler then before.  Could this be an idle or fuel mixture problem?

Dont tell me you put brakes on the back,, please..

If it needed a clutch, someone didnt know how to use one,
Mite need to jet the carb if the Dyna is a new addition.

Well it is my first bike when I bought it a 4K.  It just catches a lot faster now.

The Dyna has been on there for 6 season already.

If it is backfiring more now than before you mite wanna ask them what they did to the carb..

I did have the back breaks changed but that was my request since it was advised two years ago.  I had my suspicions on these guys when they had me pick up the bike.

First they told me to pick it up saturday but when I went monday the tech hadn't test drove it yet after doing the repairs.  I asked him to test drive it since that was his job.  If he survived I assumed I'd be fine.

When they turned the bike over they kept suggesting to change the engine gaskets and put a new muffler on it because it backfired a lot.  I told them I'd ride it for a while.

When I got home I cleaned the oil off and drove it around a while.  Everything runs fine except for the backfiring.  I remembered that since they changed the clutch they probably removed the Dyna muffler.

Low and behold I pit my hand near the joints and theres air blowing everywhere.

This shop is definitely not worthy of any respect or business.  They got the tire and breaks changed which was the main objective I couldn't do without a garage.  I'm going to fix the rest myself and just put a really crappy review on Yelp for them.  These guys were terrible.  And they wanted to screw me over for a new muffler and engine gaskets too.

They are called Al's Cycle Shop on Glendale Blvd. in Los Angeles.  These guys give honest mechanics a bad name.

If you didnt get the old brakes handed to you, you didnt avtually see the shape theyre in, Its a rare thing to see them wear out,
