Title: '88 suzuki intruder 750
Post by sleezyrider on 10/13/13 at 10:16:38

Just picked one up last night for a thousand, she's got 42000 miles on her but she staryed up just fine, engine sounded good, very responsive. I did notice a little white come off the engine at a stop light but it was minimal and didn't happen again. Anybody familiar with these machines that could enlighten me about them? Any common problems to look for or preventive maintenance that could save me trouble in the future? Any insight or experiences welcome. Knowlege is power.

Look in the tech chunk of the Cafe for VS800/S50, same bike with a slightly bigger bore.

My wife has a 96 800 that she loves.

I have a 88 750 and love it. I just had to replace the stator and regulator on mine last week. One of the biggest pains is to remove/replace the battery. I spent the extra and got a G Man battery for it. The 750/800 is just a stretched out Savage with an extra cylinder  :D

You mean a SaSavage ?  :D

I'd say the 1400 is a Savage with an extra cylinder...

The Intruder 750 is water cooled, 10:1 compression,.. with  2 carbs.. and even 2 air filters if I remember correctly...
It's a much more modern engine with great power but, no fun to work on...
They even used that engine in a sorta' naked cafe/standard type bike for a couple of years... VX800...
Shame they stopped making that one... I kinda' liked it...

Serowbot is correct, the 750/800 is NOT fun to work on. There is not a lot of room to work.

Have to pull the engine to access the front carburetor. Lisa loves her Intruder, I despise it with a hatred normally reserved for late model fuel injected electronic ignition distributorless V8s...

I've been looking at maduras.
I think the tank capacity/fuel economy is going to stop me from getting one though :(

Fuel capacity/range on the VS750/800 is the same as the Savage. I can go between 100-120 miles before switching to reserve on both bikes (depending on how I ride). It's nice having the extra power to get away from  traffic while on the super slab  :)

I love the way the 750 rides, but the savages carb was enough of a pain to get in and out, I'm dreading this

I didn't like the S50 I owned several years ago either ... in fact I couldn't stand it for the most part ...

there's not enough difference between the savage/S-40 and the intruder 700/800/S-50 to deal with the increased maintenance issues

Perry, just curious.  What was so bad?

pg,... JMHO... I rode one a bit, on a couple of occasions...
The throttle feel is very satisfying... that motor has some good go to it...
... but, it feels very top heavy,.. cramped,... (a very Japanese choppery feeling)... (elbows in the way of knees)...
... and,.. it is a chore to work on and maintain...
You don't want to change a tire, battery, air filter, adjust carbs or valves...
It's not a DIY bike... and it ain't special enough to pay someone else to do the work if you have money...
You want special... get a Ducati... 8-)...

The S50 I (very) briefly owned wasn't a "bad" Bike ... hell it's a Suzuki, a model which had been in their line-up for 20 years at the time I had mine ... I just didn't like it ... the thing did not "speak" to me on any level what so ever ... it had no "soul" if that makes any sense??

I still had my 1st LS650 at the time and a co-worker offered me his S50 with practically no miles on it for a steal of a price. I liked the look of it (Sportster-esque) and thought I'd take a chance. Sold my Savage and bought the S50 ... didn't take me long to realize I wasn't fussy about the S50 ...

Now, some might say that my current VT750DC Shadow Spirit is as "soul-less" a motorcycle as the VS800 ... and you might be right ... granted, the Spirit doesn't have the "character" of the LS650, but my '06 Shadow, for me anyhow, is "just right" and I would (and likely will) buy another ... the Phantom model is absolutely beautiful!! 8-)

EDIT: adding a couple of pics

the '06 S50 I once owned;

the '06 750 Spirit I currently own;

LOL!! Looking at those pics "side by each" as we say up here on The Rock, those two Bikes looks kinda similar to each other! I still prefer the Honda though ...

it wasn't a bad bike at all, I thought it had great character, it's just not different enough from the S40/Savage to make it worth the extra expense of dealing with a twin engine, handlebars still vibrate more or less the same, seat is the same, seating position is the same, same spoke wheels, it weighs 100 lbs more so the extra power isn't all that effective, but it has liquid cooling that you have to worry about, and if the carbs aren't balanced right then I don't know what you have to do to fix that,  and you have two exhaust pipes to clean.  if it would have been fuel injected and had cast wheels it'd be a very cool bike imo

Thanks. Not sure why I have always liked the look of the 90s cruisers.  Everyone one in a while you can find one a good price.

The 750 isn't too hard to work on, I've been having an easy enough time, and I love the 'japanese chopper' feeling. I think ducatis are an incredible waste of money.

I think they're a nice way to waste money...
