Title: Buying Used...
Post by trisonic on 10/12/13 at 21:41:13

Hi, new member here, A Brit in New Jersey returning to riding after a thirty year hiatus...
I couldn't find this after a search but I must admit to being confused by the search facility here, so forgive me a little if this has been asked recently.
I've been reading about the petcock and cam chain tensioner issues BUT if I'm looking for a used S40 of recent vintage what should I be looking for when I'm stood staring at the bike with the current owner eyeing me up?

Cheers, Pete.

Aside from the posts at the top of RSD BY Verslagen and Serowbot, go to page 6 of the tech section and scroll down to the 8th post, What a loose cam chain sounds like. You can record this on your cell phone and take it with you when you look at the bike.

Just look for a clean one, with low miles...
Pic the color you like...(painting is pricey)...
They come with drag bars and risers, or pullbacks...
(I like the drags... pullbacks made me hold on too tight in the wind)...

You can replace the petcock for $30, in 10 minutes... the cam chain adjuster for $100,... will take a couple of hours... but it won't be needed right away... (10k to 25k miles)...

Beyond that,... not much... tires and oil changes...

If you get a Harley muffler, that's a bonus... (they sound good)...
You can do yer' own for $30... in 1 hour... easy...

Stators will give out at 30 to 50 k miles... but, that's true of most bikes that run them in oil...
Other than that,... bulletproof...

I think the white ones are prettiest...

Welcome to America,... and to SS.Com...
;)...

PS... New Jersey just had major flooding... look for mud/sand in hidden places...  You don't want to buy one that has been submerged...
If you do,... buy cheap... you'll have a lot of cleaning and lubing to do...

Thanks, guys. Sorry if I've covered ground already covered....

I really want to turn the S40 into a grotty "Rat Bike" in black, natch, complete with the cloth tape covered exhaust. However it may look like a Rat Bike but the internals and all working (or safety) parts will be in top notch condition.

It seems to me that an S40 is an ideal "re-starter" bike and even if I get a big lazy V Twin in the future may still  be my "go to" bike. I like simplicity and the "KISS" mind set.

Another quickie: Are the spoked wheels the type that can take tubeless tires???

Best, Pete.

Thanks,

It certainly looks that way!

I've been trying to search for the seat mod (raising the front) thread - if you or anyone else knows where to go, off the top of your head can you link to it?

Sorry to be a pain.........

Again, many thanks! Pete.
